Saw him. We were in a ranger on a big ranch and he crosses the road right in front of us.

Ya. We didn't know if he was gonna keep going or what but we bailed out to grab some shots and he posted up by the oak tree and algarita.

Is that an eastern diamondback or just a darker western?

Western. Westerns can come in a variety of color phases. I've found rust colored individuals around Santa Ana, TX (as an example). Eastern Diamondbacks are not found in TX - East Coast.

Agreed. My brother thought it was a rough green snake at first but then realized it was too bluish and figured out it was a racer. He found it inside a rubber boot on his front porch.

For anyone wondering, he did not kill it. He likes snakes too.

You know why the snake was in the boot? Because snakes dream about having feet. Then we'll really have nightmares!

Thanks to this thread, my kids correctly identified various venomous and non venomous snakes in the Witte Museum "Texas Wild" exhibit! Featured were King snake, hognose, corn snake, yellow bellied racer, coral, a rattler, and a handful more.

you should be proud! after at least 30 years my mother, sister, and girlfriend all think every snake is a copperhead or water moccasin.

They inveigled a late bedtime out of me one night by going through every.single.page of this thread at the beginning of summer.

Our little slice of heaven once was "the country", but with quick access to everything. Now it seems like ground zero of development. Snakes of several type were common, turtles, bobcats, fox, deer, countless bird varieties were daily visitors. Now, not so much. Fewer and fewer each year.

I say that to say this, carpe milkum is now 4. I wanted him to grow up knowing nature in his big backyard of a few rural acres. We may have to move a few miles south.

Agreed, we are currently living the city life with farming backgrounds. Believe me, we have anot eventual plan for escape.

Not a snake, but I have never seen a box turtle in a mud puddle.

Whereabouts? Box turtles love water. Used to keep them as a kid. They've gotten scarce in North Texas this past few years.

Callahan County. He had a grasshopper in his mouth when I first drove upon him.

How does a box turtle ever move fast enough to catch a grasshopper?

"Ah, if you can snatch the pebble from my paw, grasshopper..."

Maybe turtle brains don't have to be big, just bigger than a grasshopper's!
