AFAIK the guy is a pretty well known herper and was on his way to an educational event with animals. Unfortunately the news blows everything out of proportion with snakes.

Not sure how to post pics, I know I suck. But I can email a picture to someone on a snake my mother in law found outside her work in the Taylor area. Everyone is screaming water moccasin because there is a pond there, but I think it's a coach whip.

Someone let me know who i can email.

Can someone recommend some good snake catching tongs? A buddy and I have pretty much volunteered to be neighborhood snake wranglers when people want them removed from garages and yards. TIA

What length would you recommend? 4 or 5 foot?

4 foot at the most. I beleive ours are all 3.5 or so.

You'll lose a lot of control when you get longer, on bigger/heavier snakes.

IMHO, a snake hook is easier to use than a pair of tongs. That's just my opinion. I usually have a 3.5 foot hook and a 2 foot one. Use both if working with a venomous snake.

I used a broom stick and a screw in wall hanger at the end when I was a kid. Always felt safe with a hook and not having to worry about holding down on the tongs.

I want tongs for when I have one in a garage or under bushes. Could probably use a hook in most other cases. Also, some of the cottonmouths are near water, so I want tongs to have a good grip so they can't get away. Thanks for all the advice.

Here's my weapon of choice.

minus the roller, don't want to stink those up.

Tongs work OK in certain cases, but I sometimes worry that I'll injure the snake. FWIW, I have several pairs of tongs. I always carry 2 hooks, one pair of tongs, and a 5 gallon bucket with a screwtop lid for venomous snakes.

Thanks Sean. Just sent the pic. I think it's a coach whip based on the pattern (not a full length photo of the snake). Would love to hear what others say.

I'll defer to the herps but I'd guess a coachwhip by what's visible.

Two more copperheads tonight, in the front yard. Caught one, then stumbled across the other while taking the first out to dump it. 2 footer and 1 footer. They weren't bitey, but wanted to get away. Hard to catch them with two sticks and a flashlight in your teeth while wearing a t shirt and boxers. Caught the first in flip flops, but switched to redwings for #2. I let them live, far away from my house.

I think I'm going to start marking them with spray paint spots to see if any wander back. I'm just glad they are copperheads and not rattlers.

Sorry, but once they were both in there, they didn't want to be still and pose for a photo.

I love the idea of marking them somehow to see if it's the same ones over time

A better idea would be dayglo paint so it absorbs light energy during the day and then is visble for an hour or so after dark.

Might make an interesting ecological study as well (if owls or other predators can find them easier)
