I wonder if some of y'all can send a rat snake or 2 my way.

My wife had been feeding lots of birds at the house and with all the seeds on the ground we now have rats. One got dispatched last night with a pellet to the head while in a feeder but we have more I'm sure.

I'm just gonna go in record and say when he described it to me I said it was a garter snake. Found a pic online and he confirmed it was a blackneck garter. People at work were losing their **** wanting to call maintenance before I knew for sure what it was and I'm like "nope. Not venomous. No Texas venomous snakes with that description." Thanks snake thread!

I ask because there are several types of garter snake in texas that can easily be confused. Texas garter snakes in particular look very similar to eastern black necked garters, but both live in Austin so that won't help with ID.

That's a hard one. I wanna say cottonmouth as well, but something about shape of the the dull pattern underneath and the lighter color at the base of the head screams broad banded water snake. Wish we had a view of the side of the head.

The pattern is off and the body doesn't scream water moccasin.

It's too light for Broad banded, not enough pattern for blotched, would be unlike any other diamondback I have ever seen, and not many other likely culprits.

*I'm thinking it's a young WM phasing out of juvinile coloration. Which would explain the lighter color and slight pattern

If pushed to pick I would also say that is a cottonmouth, but the body shape and pattern are throwing me off a little. I'd really like another angle.

That would make more sense, the only snake I thought it could remotely be is a racer and I have yet to see one in this area. I will see what I can find next time I am on the trail.
