I am not a snake wrangler by any stretch of the imagination....but there was SO much "no freaking way" going on in that extended clip I don't even know where to start.
There's so much debris in the room he doesn't have any way of having clear movement (towards or away from the snake)
Reaching down into the box of clothing. I admit he may have been able to see clearly where the tongs were gripping but it seemed foolish.
Grabbing it by the tail when he didn't know (or acted surprised) how big it was (seems like an easy way for it to come back on you).
If it was this easy, then Steve Irwin put on a lot of show when he caught the one in the hut (sweat, tremble voice and all)

It was one of the theories but according to the story this mamba was neither de-fanged nor had its venom sacs removed and was fully hot. It was theorized it was a dry bite.

Almost zero chance that happened. Dry bite is the likely culprit.
