For most people, I'd say yes, they going to die a very painful death, and soon.

However, that's Viper Keeper. Dude is somewhat of a modern day Bill Haast, who lived to the ripe old age of almost 101, and was bitten by hots over 170 times.
That brings back some great memories. My parents lived in Miami when I was younger and the serpentarium was always a go to when family came into town or summer day trip.

He would let the king cobra go in a grass patch and the only thing separating it from us in the crowd were some small shrubs. He would catch it, milk it and feed it with a caulk gun. They always had some random safe snake for kids to hold, touch and feel. He did great things to educate many that are my age that not all snakes are bad.

Reptile day at the library.
Getting the kid started early - he loved it, despite his expression in the picture.

Water moccasin. T&P for the kid.

Here are some recent pictures of common snakes in the area.

A couple weeks ago at Sheldon Lake State Park (east side of Houston):

A ribbon snake is doing its best black mamba impersonation:

Here is the face of a large broad banded water snake that was lying just off the trail with another large BBWS:

This yellow belly water snake was hanging out near the shed where the park rangers keep their fishing gear:

This yellow belly water snake was near a shed on my property in Northern Grimes County:

When I came back he had moved onto a pile of landscape planks:

So I have at least one rat/mouse under my deck. My friend has rat snakes at her house. Is this a legit idea? If I get one and put it under my deck, will it stay?

Awesome pictures! Don't they have a bunch of gators there, too? I've never been but heard it's a cool place.

Why not? In all reality, snakes will make there way over to your deck/area if there is a sufficient food source. Either way it's better than rats.

Reminds me of my own childhood, except that the snakes were hognoses and it was in Lubbock. That water did look like the end of a dirt road after a flash flood. Spring thunderstorms flooded the road, which attracted toads, which attracted snakes, which attracted all the local kids. Good times.

For me, Sheldon State park is somewhat of a hidden gem. Since Sheldon Reservior is completely within the park boundaries, it is one of the few lakes in Texas where a fishing license is not required, even if you are fishing from a boat. The snake pictures are from the main area of the park that has nice hiking trails between ponds left over from an old fish hatchery and fields that are being reclaimed into natural prairie. It is a great place for birding, herping, and general nature walks. Yes, there are gators, usually, but not always, the ponds have smaller ones and the large ones keep to the reservoir. The trails are not long enough for a long hike, but since they are wide and well maintained, it is great place for families, even with small children. There is no overnight camping, except possibly for small groups. On the other hand, they do not charge an entrance fee.

I got my Eastern Hognose to eat a pinky mouse! Yay!!!!!!!!

Easterns are wired to eat almost exclusively amphibians in captivity, although their wild diet is said to be about 60-70%, with birds, lizards, and mice (in decreasing order) making up the rest.

I've been keeping hognoses for 25 years, so this is the culmination of a lot of research. I have frozen pinkies for my corn snakes, so I thawed one out, soaked it in chicken broth (to remove the rodent scent), and then rubbed it against a toad. I then put the snake and food in a small container so that he would alsways be in close proximity to the prey. 15 minutes later, I see the bulge in his stomach and go nuts. Yay!!! (If you keep snakes, you know how significant this is).

I warmed up Eggbert's mice in the microwave without issue, but I had already chopped them up a bit.
Good to know should I ever find myself in the unexpected role of a rehabber for a couple days again.
