Recued this guy (i.e. a rough earth snake) from the Socialists last night. Third one I've found in the house in a week, although #2 was beyond saving once I found him.

This was #1 on Saturday morning. Not sure how they are getting in, since I've never found any in the house before. The grey guy has found all three of them, and is consistently catching any bug that gets in the house. He's a hunter, but is 100% inside cat. For the songbirds.

When I was a kid, we used to find these same small snakes all over Memphis. You could find them near the in ground water meters used here all the time. Its been years since I've seen one here though.

I do have a pair of Chippewas that I keep in my work truck. They are now 17 years old and have worked for me well. I typically wear Justin woorkboots and for copperheads they do fine.

Would be fun to do a strike test with common boots to see how they do against a 5 foot rattler.

We finally found a willing test subject! Thanks tx4guns, for volunteering your leg to venomous snake bites.

We have seen about 10 rough earth snakes dead in the road this past week around our neighborhood. Curious to the cause of death? We have had some strong rains recently and were they effectively drowned? Or is it more likely to be edger/mower hits due to increased lawn maintenance. A Reaction to fertilizers/herbicides?

Rattler... I wouldn't volunteer for that.

Everything else... sure.

Problem is mostly area of strike.

Could be. But these are closer to the curb than normal traffic. We usually see a couple here and there, but last night I made it a point to count as it seemed like more than normal.

My guess is the 6inches of rain we got last week soaked them out. Just curious if any other ideas.

Edgers kill a lot of brown and rough earth snakes this time of year as they come out in the day and hide beside roads and sidewalks for radiative warmth at night. Sounds like edger kill to me.

At first I thought it was a copperhead with faded coloration. Then the neighbor said its head/neck puffed out like a cobra, so I changed my opinion to hognose.

I didn't even notice the blades of grass in the pic to use for scale. I might have reconsidered my answer had I considered the size of the snake.

That and his subtle pattern near the tail gave it away for me.

This little cutie pie tried to get in the car and go to work with me this morning. I know the ladies at work wouldn't like him, so I moved him into the yard. He lives in Georgia, and is about a foot long. I know all unidentified nonvenomous snakes on the Outdoor Boards are rat snakes until proven otherwise, but is that right in this case?

Thanks, folks. Looked at some pics on the worldwide inter webs and it is definitely a northern brown snake. TexAgs Outdoors Board comes through in about 4 minutes!

Edits: Autocorrect, in contrast, leaves much to be desired.
