How does a box turtle ever move fast enough to catch a grasshopper?

They will actually just sit and wait. When a grasshopper hops but, they can get them. We used to put them in our garden at the zoo to eat insects.

They LOVE grasshoppers. And they were pure death to the cottonwood longhorn borers that lived on the cottonwood in our backyard. It was like the Roman Colloseum during the gladiator days.

They LOVE cicada larvae, too. Our pet one would pig out on them.

Backed my mower out from its spot beside the shed and as I backed up, a BIG copperhead went the other direction from beneath it, but got under my shed where I couldn't get at it. Very vivid coloration and pattern. Must have shed recently. Well over 2 feet.

We would take this opportunity to tell happy stories about MouthBQ. This is not a time of sadness.

Shame about the shed Mouth...were you able to salvage much before it burned completely?

If it wasn't in his hands, we might have 2-3 copperhead votes by now.

not sure who was trying to eat who, but isnt it nice to be at the top of the food chain?

My guess is the the catfish was there first and the snake came along and sensed an easy meal. Although, judging by the relative size of the two, I'm not sure he'd have been successful sans the trotline.

Wife found this in backyard. About 2.5 feet long and fairly intact. Any help since I know nothing about snakes?

Thanks!

This old lady is a turtle hunter. Let her outside and comes back on and drops this little feller on the floor. Thisnisnthe third turtle or maybe the same one who knows. Sure it was either covering eggs or laying.

that would have been my first guess but since i use live perch for bait and have caught several water snakes before, the way they were both hooked like that makes me think it was the snake was on the line first. quite impressive if that diamondback could have fit her mouth all the way around that fish though.

does it count for anything that the snake is closer to the eye of the hook?
Brush Country

Didn't realize the snake was hooked, thought he was just fouled in the line. But now I'm impressed with the cat's ambition.

if you zoom in you can see them both hooked. heres a couple other angles.

By process of semi-intelligence, the snake was on the hook first. Therefour, the snake wanted a perch snack and the cat wanted a snakey-perch snack.

Pretty cool pics. I've run trot lines many times and haven't seen that!

Flashback to running a trotline in the middle of the night with a crappy flashlight.
My buddy in front pulled up a fish and dropped in the boat, but it wasn't a fish, it was a snake..
It immediately became unhooked and was loose in the boat.
After much chaos (and hilarity for any witnesses outside the boat) he got out and swam away.
We did not jump out of the boat, but I'm sure it was an option at the time.
