Nothing too exciting, but my first snake of 2017 was this broadbanded watersnake on Jan 2nd at Brazos Bend SP. Lots of gators out that day too.

I love this thread.
If you put me in a room full of rats and possums I'll stroke out. Graveyard dead. But for some reason I am fascinated by snakes and have pretty much zero anxiety or fear around them.

Perhaps I wasn't clear. I KNOW it's not a mamba. Just commenting that I'd never seen a rat snake that color before....now that I've looked closer (and since more pics have been posted), i can see the pattern on the snake making it a dead give-a-way.
It has been 16 degrees the past two nights in Nacogdoches. Does much colder than normal Temps have much of an effect on snake populations? I remember hearing that the unusually cold south Florida winter from a few years back had a dramatic effect on the pythons.
Not really. The snakes in FL are mostly from tropical places around the world and barely tolerate cold temps.
Native snakes of Texas and most of the US are acclimated to periods of cold temperature. Think about all of the snakes in the Nac area and look at their range. Most of them go way northeast where it consistently gets this cold.

I didn't follow up on it but maybe just pest removal. I've gotten plenty of snake removal calls before because people don't want them at their house and would rather me come get them than kill them.TheVarian said:carpe vinum said:
