Blotched water snake.

Once again, water moccasin is a very broad general term used to describe any water snake. The only poisonous water moccasin in the U.S. is the cottonmouth. The snake pictured is most definitely not a cottonmouth.

Almost all water snakes, when threatened, flatten out their head. Not always the best indicator but useful if just "observing"

If I've learned anything from this thread, trying to base it off of the shape of the head is pretty hard to do. The eye looks round though, and the stripes under the eye are vertical (non-moccasin) not horizontal with that long dark eye black looking stripe that moccasins have.

Round eyes and vertical lines on the bottom jaw = water snake

Hard to tell without seeing the head and eyes better, but for me, that fat body and skinny tail suggest cottonmouth. But I am sure somebody else will come along to point out I am wrong.

On my tablet this am. When I zoom in on that pic, it just gets too blurry to see anything useful. My second guess would have been a hognose.

On the most recently posted picture, that's the dead snake, in the first pic you can see vertical stripes under the jaw.

Dead give away that it's not a cottonmouth.

Many differences, although they do look similar.

It's a close one but there is zero doubt the previous picture is a diamondback water snake.

It's a diamondback watersnake. There are definite differences between the two. When visible, the horizontal band across the eye of the cottonmouth in your post above is proof positive of cottonmouth. Other water snake species in the U.S. do not ever have this feature.

Plus, 12f mane already chimed in and he's the definitive authority on this thread.

zoom isnt working for me on that diamondback but its belly looks really yellow, isnt that a dead giveaway its not a cottonmouth?
