I live in Lubbock. No pics, but there have been two small kids bitten by rattlesnakes out here in this area the last two weeks. I think both instances the kids were out playing in the yard and up around the porch.
I hate to hear about anyone getting bit, especially little kids, I almost always check the place before I let carpe milkum out.
Just a quick walk through, or lead when he's out in the pasture.

I grew up in Lubbock and have caught & released literally hundreds of hognose snakes. Rarely we would find a garter snake or a bull snake. Never saw a single rattlesnake the whole time. Sucks that those two kids got bit just playing in the yard like that.

We did kill a couple of small ones this spring at the golf course where we sometimes practice. It's south and west of the loop. I'm fairly new out here, I was a little surprised.
I never saw one in Lubbock itself, but up towards Kress and Dimmitt I used to see quite a few.
Side note---took my wife to a wedding in Dimmitt several years ago, she pretty well refuses to go to that part of the state again.

Just so everyone knows, rattlesnakes, eastern and western, are just about NEVER longer than 7ft these days. Claims abound, but no wild specimens are ever verified. Six footers are out there, but extremely rare.
That pic has been around at least 5 years.
Sitting on my back porch and caught movement in my big post oak. Watched him go from about 6 feet off the ground all the way up. Pic is about 25 ft high. Guess he was looking for birds. Speckled Kingsnake about 3-4 feet long. This is the second one I've seen on my property. First one was about 5-6 feet long. Love having them around.
Just caught and released a baby rat snake, maybe 10-12" long. Took a bunch of pics, will find a decent one or two and post them. Probably the most mellow rat snake I have ever messed with.

Like many things, they are cute and nice as babies, adult rats (in my hood) are usually foul tempered.
Not water snake level foul tempered, but generally grumpy.

Yep, right on my front walk. A couple days ago, I stumbled across what could have been mama, for all I know. About a 4 footer. Remarkably, it never coiled or struck, it just retreated from me and froze every time it lost track of me. Finally went up under my shed.
If my wife wasn't so afraid of snakes, I would have kept that baby rat, at least for a while, as long as it would eat regularly.

Looks almost like a carpet python. I know it's not but similar.
My sister had this in her back yard next to the steps to the pool.
It had 14 babies and was beginning to give birth.
That'll wake you up.
BTW... she has several tiny grandkids that come over and use that pool, so sorry, she is going to kill any rattler in her back yard!

chopped up a ribbon snake pretty good with the mower Sunday.

My sister's neighbor sent her this one that they found adjacent to the fence between their yard and my sister's. As you can see, it was really close to the play area for their children, so unfortunately they killed it. Beautiful large coral though...
