That's a cottonmouth in need of a shed.

Possums and venomous snakes catch a free ride down to the end of Indian Lakes.

I've got a place at the end of Indian Lakes. Don't want any stinkin possums or copperheads/rattlesnakes dropped off near my house.

My brother lived in that nice neighborhood near Indian Lakes for several years. He had copperheads in his yard like crazy.

In Namibia hunting now. Walking behind ph and a black mamba raised its head up about 3 1/2 feet off the ground about 5 feet from us. It was in tall grass and we were surprised by it. Sorry no pic it happened too fast. Saw a puff adder a couple of days ago. Again no pic.

Saw this today at Stephen F. Austin State Park. It's only the second one I've ever seen in the wild.

Visited Brazos Bend State park yesterday with the kids. Saw lots of gators in the wild and some snakes in the nature center.

Hognose taking a drink of water.

My kids checking out the rather large rat snake.

Copperhead

Small but deadly cottonmouth.

Canebrake rattler.

Trying to teach to kids to not be afraid but have a healthy respect for wildlife. Speckled king snake.

Surprising they have an Eastern Hognose. Those are hard to feed (only eat amphibians). I used to have one - switched it over to eat bull frog tadpoles from the bait shop and toad-scented mice.

Will they eat gulf coast toads?

I'd imagine that's what it eats. Either way the snake on display there is huge and healthy for a hognose.

Yes, they will eat toads. In the wild, they found their diet to be primarily amphibians, but also a surprising amount of lizards and rodents.

My wild caught one would only eat toads or frogs until I had him for a while.

I keep going back and forth between hog nose and water snake. I know it's not a CM which is what everyone on fb thinks.

I think I see vertical stripes on his bottom lip. This thread taught me that's a water snake...?

Definitely a hognose. No question. Not a water snake and not even close to looking like a cottonmouth.

For me it is The nose and shape of head. It comes to a bit of a point. It's not super clear in the photo, but it's there.
Yellow bellies seem to have a more oval/elongated head. Hog noses look more round/stumpy faced in my opinion.

On FB, it's a CM until proven otherwise.

All those things mentioned above as well as the black spot behind the head. The spot is not always obvious on darker h ognoses, but when present it is a dead give away. Also the eyes are different. They are further apart than on water snakes. Water snakes have eyes closer to the top of their head so they can see better when hiding with most of their bodies under water. For confirmation, look at a pic of a diamondback water snake's head. It is most notable in that species.
