Jeez, I thought the occasional scorpion in the house or water snake in the garage was a pain.
Idea: Metal garden edging or flashing buried a couple of inches in the ground along the base of the fence. The snakes encounter it and go along it instead of bothering to go up and over it. Would this work?
Good idea and will likely work on the little guys... the bigger snakes will just elevate themselves over it unless you raise it 3' above ground level, which would prevent most snakes but not a large rat snake.
Not to mention, you'd be creating a damn in your backyard for water.
I like to apply the phrase "life finds a way" when trying to prevent animals from doing something they've evolved to do...

I'm just trying to keep out smaller copperheads and such. The big snakes a WANT around..they eat those little buggers.
Juvenile snake... didn't need killed but the gardener didn't ask permission.

I'm feeling better about my ability to identify venomous and non-venomous snakes and I think that's helping me to not want to kill them all with fire. Awareness does a lot to end prejudice, I guess.
I'd still rather not come across ANY snake, but am hopeful that if/when I do, I can make the informed and correct decision on what it is and how to handle it. Will have to see if it translated IRL.

I'm still not too great with IDing cottonmouths - there seems to be a lot of variation in them. Right now I go with black/dark brown and fat bodies/thin necks.
I'd still rather not come across ANY snake, but am hopeful that if/when I do, I can make the informed and correct decision on what it is and how to handle it. Will have to see if it translated IRL.

When I was a kid we had a snake in the dryer. Mom went to put a load in and it was sitting there with its face against the lint basket.
Dad and a neighbor got the dryer outside and it must have taken 3 hrs to get the snake out. Finally a second neighbor came along with a can of wasp spray and the snake gtfo quick when he got a nose full of it. Big ole stinky bull snake.
Mom was always extra careful when she opened the dryer after that.

Holy hell, they have a LOT of cameras!
My brother had a 5-6 foot long boa when we were teenagers. One day it got out and we couldn't find it anywhere. A couple of days later the housekeeper came and about had a heart attack when she picked up a laundry basket full of clothes and it was there just hanging out.
On top of the backdrop at the Everclear concert in new braunfels. People were screaming and I'm cracking the hell up. Best pic I could get.
What do we have here with this cute little fella? He and his lady friend were chilling under a hay bale.

That was my mildly educated opinion.
I'd say checkered garter. But that confuses me. There was one I'd swear was a garter but 12th called it a brown.
I am pretty confident that's correct. The pattern fades towards the tail... that's usually an indicator for me.
