And another thumbs up for the wife letting the snake live!
Ummm... just curious... why let this guy go?

Don't tase me bro, just asking.
Because it is no threat to you if you are aware of your surroundings

Yeah they are so shy I don't see them as a threat and my kids know not to touch. My biggest fear is one of my kids running past a tree stump and getting tagged by a copperhead. They don't get the free pass.

Gopher snake?

Mottled trouser snake. Best to take a hoe to it.

I don't want to derail, but can't pass up story time on this subject.

Good friend of mine in high school asked his grandpa why he was grouchy on one particular day. Grandpa told him the he hadn't 'had any' in awhile so he was grumpy.

My buddy, trying to help, asked grandma why she was letting grandpa be grumpy.

Her reply: "Because a dick looks like something that should be hit with a stick."

Story is probably better in person, I laughed pretty dang hard at the time and that was 20 years ago.

Already answered but two things:

Wife letting any snake live
Recognizing that even as venomous as a coral snake is, the overall threat it poses is virtually nonexistent.

and there just cool snakes

I suppose, but man, for me - with kids and dogs around (both of which, in general, are stupid), I'd rather not take the risk.

And I don't judge you, or others, for doing so. I have two kids as well and don't like the idea of them being that close to venomous snakes but the fact is they are and will always be (from time to time).

I read this on the interweb:

No deaths from a coral snake bite have been reported since 1967 when the antivenin was developed

And also this:

Coral snakes account for 15-25 of the 8,000 venomous bites each year in the US.

So a pretty small percentage of bites. And thanks all who contribute to this thread. I've learned so much from it.

And in 6 months this 2017 thread is now longer then the 2016 thread.

I'd put gooooood money on 100% of those being a handled snake

No, but really, if you want to see snakes, look for them in their habitat or when they are active.

Walk around any creek, and you are bound to see a water snake of some type.

Saw a great looking broad banded water snake crossing the bike path at buffalo bayou park just west of the dog park. About 2.5 feel long. Quick sucker high tailed it into the woods the second he realized I was reaching for my camera.

I managed to avoid running over a ribbon snake with the mower today but then turned around and accidentally whacked a little brown snake with my edger. So I was 50/50 for the day.

Was at a family camp last week and another family found this guy on their porch. Unfortunately, there are too many little kids running around to let it live.

I was showing a golfin' buddy my coral snake pic and he started talking about how deadly it was. He's the type that it's easier to walk away than try to educate. I've "matured" enough to not have to try to win every argument, especially with people you know won't listen. Plus it would have ruined the rest of the round with the debate.

I'd rather take a hoe to him than to a poisonous* snake.

I've never seen a snake this pretty!! Then again, I don't see too many snakes except for on texags.

Funny side fact: my husband can't stand snakes and doesn't understand my fascination with this thread. I'll show him the pictures occasionally and he just rolls his eyes and says gross. HA!!
