Corn snake... unusual color phase. Probably an escaped pet. Looks like a designer snake.

I thought it was a prairie kingsnake, but I always have difficulty telling them apart from great plains rat snakes. What's the best way to tell those two and gray phase corn snakes apart from each other?

She was screaming to get back in the house. I normally don't kill any rattlesnakes, but I wasn't going to let this one hang around the house. Garden hoes are wonderful tools.

Edit - if that's the same snake in both pictures it's a yellow belly. I suck at reading... it clearly states it's the same picture in badaces post.

It's Nerodia erythrogaster and by the time it's a little older no one would dispute it being called a yellow bellied water snake, but at this age it would be acceptable to call it a blotched water snake too. As I've stated in previous posts, the difference between to two "subspecies" seems more like age than anything a lot of the time.

My 8 year old found this guy near our wood pile. He did exactly what he's been taught, come get me if they see any snake and leave it alone. We have a "Snakes of the Southeast US" book, so we put him in a glass jar, looked up Garder snakes, and read about their habitat, diet, range, etc. Both my boys thought that he/she was pretty cool. Turned him loose a few minutes later.
