Bright yellow tail and pattern, give it away. But it's tough for a lot of people to distinguish juvenile moccasin vs copperhead.

Where abouts in SE Texas? Any rattlesnakes in Jacksonville/Palestine area? I've never seen one and haven't heard of anyone seeing them around here.

Quite a bit south of there. I'd imagine there a timbers in the forested areas up there and probably Pygmy rattlesnakes somewhere close.

Head a little west of Palestine, to the Gus Engling WMA, and there a ton of pygmies around the bog areas.

This is true. GE is a herp magent. The East Texas Herp Society is having their annual spring meet there this year. If you want to see a bunch of snakes and a bunch of snake nerds all gathered in one place you should go.

Definitely not harmless. Will bite and are venomous.

Nice surprise this morning. Snake Bites all around!

So the two delinquents haven't been paying attention to Master Po (Duck):

"Better to be sprayed by skunk than bit by venomous snake."

Is it typical for dogs to survive venomous snake bites? Or do you know for sure if they were venomous?

I'm 35 and still have trouble with this scene. Thanks mom for letting my watch LD when I was like 8 years old.

Unless they have a bad reaction, I think most large breed dogs can typically easily survive everything but a rattlesnake or coral snake bite, even without steroids, Benadryl, and antibiotics BUT its typically recommended that they get at least a little bit of the above.

I vaccinate my dogs against snakebites because we have a fair amount of venomous snakes around. No real reaction at all if they get bit by a non venomous snake. The dogs generally do better if they're bit on the face than if they are bit on the leg.

... that said, in full disclosure, once the swelling went down significantly I was able to see signs of scratches, particularly behind Charlie's ears and on the side of his face. Hmmm... Snakes don't scratch. I started looking closer and the dual punctures on the dogs seemed a little big for fangs. But just about right for raccoon canine teeth punctures. This morning I did a quick walk around the place and sure enough, dead raccoon in one of my food plots. So I think we had a misdiagnosis. It was basically impossible to tell when they were all swollen up and we have had snakebites here before so it was a rational thought.

So you just took the easy way and blames it on the snakes. Way to stereotype...........;-)

Dogs are pretty good about surviving a snakebite, we had a dachshund / cocker spaniel mix that was a great snake alarm when I was a kid. She would find them and bark until they were dispatched or relocated. She was popped at least 3 different times all in the face and muzzle. She would swell up and it would go away a couple of days. Only killed copperheads at the home place, so that was what likely got her.

Edit: The only other snakes we saw regularly were hognose and had a good sized king snake. Copperhead sightings went way up after we lost the king snake.
