But when you come lookin' for someone to validate that inner urge to put some rusty money back in circulation and jump onboard with a project, vehicle, gun, boat, fishing trip..... you name it:

I'm your guy.

I think the advantage is price, isn't it? Aren't the Toyota ones, if available, terribly expensive?
That's my understanding. I wanted a complete brake refresh now so I don't worry about it on a cliff in Utah.

I like that! I wonder how much horsepower the H55 can handle?? Honest question because I'm not knowledgeable on every application of that trans. And I'm thinking in terms of torque... I don't think that's an application for an LS1 hot rod. I'd imagine a bone stock steel block LM7 out of a Tahoe/sub/Silverado would be a nice pair with a 60.

All things being about equal, would you choose gas or diesel engine in a fj40 or bj?

The main issue with BJ40s (diesels) is just availability. They are rarer, and as a result more expensive. Performance-wise, I'm sure they're the Bomb.

Gladewater a disappointment?

Gladewater is out of town and i have not seen it yet. Got a tip from friend in Austin area about a diesel and spoke with the owner this morning and he has 2 fj40s he is wanting to upgrade, thus the sale of the diesel. Said he would take $ 16,500 as the headliner is crap as the visors are also but otherwise looks pretty good shape.

All 3 of his cruisers were redone and imported into here from Ecuador. He has a '83 gas that is pristine with winch he wants $ 30,000 for . Tempting!!!!

I went to do educate myself on BJ40s because I don't know that I've ever seen one in person and wanted to peek under the hood. I searched on youtube and this video was near the top of the search results.

I don't really know what it is. But I can confirm, if you watch it enough times, and try hard.

You will find a Land Cruiser in it.

One of my kids was born in '97 - I have mused before that an anniversary Land Cruiser wouldn't be a bad 'year of my birth' vehicle.

What features do the Anniversary editions have apart from regular ones?

Badging, seats are 2 tone, special Antique Sage Metallic which is the most desirable color, nothing mechanical is different.

edit: also came in green which no one wants

Nothing wrong with BJs, but some parts could be harder to find in here. Nothing wrong with an imported cruiser either, just make sure you are not getting a fly by night bondo resto job from South America. The market is flooded with them. I would personally be more interested in the east tx survivor, pending rust assessment.

Is this guy in Fort Worth? Because I drove by a 1976 fj40 for $23,900. It's a good looking rig (from driving very slowly by, then turning around and doing so again).

I do not have a source. *the rest of this assumes you are talking bout a Vintage Air Gen IV unit* I have installed a couple VintageAir units in 67-72 Chevy trucks and have found them to be very user friendly installs; the instructions and packaging are superb, making the process very straightforward. I say that to say - since the kits are in the $1200-$1500 range - yes, that $5k seems high; but I don't know what the going rate is.

I have researched the FJ40 kit at length and I can see doing that upgrade in the future for Mrs. CP's comfort. I do like how the GenIV looks in the cab.

ETA - don't feel compelled to limit yourself to a Land Cruiser shop or expert to install this. The VA units can be installed by a competent owner or certainly auto A/C shop with equal results. There is nothing 'land cruiser' specific that should run the price up besides a set of metric tools.

Does this mean you're in the game??

Not sure where in TX it is. Overton sells nice stuff and I bet it's priced accurately. I doubt that one will last long at all.

Thanks for the ac info and good to hear i can shop around vs being locked in to cruiser specialty shop. Haven't pulled the trigger on a cruiser yet but am negotiating on 2 now and hope to buy by this weekend so my wife, dog and adult beverage can cruise the back roads this weekend. Honestly, probably negotiating with myself but with research and advice like yours, a conclusion is coming. I'm in the DFW area if you know of a Vintage Air dealer here, please advise and again, thanks for your help.

One note Clay (and like aggiepaintrain, I think $5k is high)

I just looked at the Vintage Air GenIV instructions to re-familiarize myself for both our benefit and see the first note is:

Quote:

For US Spec vehicle, may not fit some international models.
I am not sure what the particulars are here or what workarounds would be necessary if the kit wasn't just a drop in - but I do know you have asked about South American units. These aren't the ONLY a/c available, I just think they're one of the best. Something to think about.

Proud owner of '83 gasser as of last nite. Drove it 5 hours home and looking for ac installer now. Need suggestions for drink holders as i have no console. Thanks to all of you for answering questions and letting me eavesdrop on your conversations. When I figure out how, will post a couple of pics.

Congrats! Welcome to the cult. Create an account on imgur, upload pics, go to a pic, click get share links, copy/paste the BBC code for forums. Tuffy makes great center consoles with drink holders.

Newby owner of '83 fj40 here. Took wife on her initial ride today and she commented her feet and legs were hot after about 30 minutes. Is a floor insulation kit available to block some of the engine heat from permeating the floor board area? Also, after I got it hone, the engine temp gauge on the instrument cluster does not work. Spoke to previous owner who said to get it fixed and he would reimburse me. Any idea what the cost would be and whom/where here in the DFW area does this? Please advise and sorry to be needy but trust you guys judgement.

Can't help you on a DFW shop; but I can offer some insight on the water temp. I've experienced this, Reddog has experienced this, along with most other 2F owners - and USUALLY (qualifying my statement here), it is the temp sender. Fixing is is a quick and easy affair, a $10 sender from auto parts store and a little pipe dope or silicone tape to keep it from leaking, and you're back in business.

The water temperature sensor is located on top of the head, near the firewall and should have a single wire running to it. On this very professionally marked photo of an outstanding FJ40 example (tip of the hat to reddog) the sender in question is circled in blue.

It will look something like this:

The problem can be wiring, it can be the gauge, or other gremlin, but this is most often the culprit and for the modest price and ease of repair, it's the go-to reaction to the problem. If that doesn't fix it then move along to other, more complicated possibilities.

As to Mrs. 77Clay's note that the floor gets hot - First: Welcome to FJ40 ownership! These rugged little jewels aren't known for creature comforts - so I'm not a bit surprised she suggested improvement. Yes, there are products made to insulate floorboards and firewalls, although I've not see one that is specific to FJs. Most are foil/radiant barriers like Thermo Tec or HushMat. You buy the product in sheets or rolls and cut to fit under your floor cover - they aren't for the outside of firewall. Which leads me to; this is assuming you aren't taking the top off and overlanding the Americas, fording rivers, because I would then be concerned about how well they would adhere, or worse, trap and hold moisture. I have used ThermoTec on a C10 before I guess it helped, but it wasn't a miracle worker. If you are going to A/C, keep it MOSTLY out of top-off-rainsotrms, and use it as a weekend cruiser - something like this will probably help. I would note that I too plan to add A/C at some time because Mrs. CP90 does not enjoy her hair blowing in her face at highway speeds. She will roll the window up enough to prevent it and never utter a single complaint, even though I know she's uncomfortably hot at times.
