I know we did something similar before, but let's take it position by position. How are we looking at each position, and how many long term solutions do we have?

1B - I figured Guzman would be the guy here, but he had some work to be a long term player for us. Lowe has been a pleasant surprise. Could he be a long term guy for this team? TBD.

2B - I know I have said it plenty of times in this thread, but I am a big fan of Solak. He can flat out hit. I see him as a guy that could hit around .300 and hit 20 to 25 homers a year. I see him as our long term solution at 2B.

SS - IKF plays great defense. He is an elite defender. If he can hit .250 or so, I lean towards him being a long term guy for us at SS.

3B - Our biggest question mark at this time. None of the guys playing now seem like long term answers. Jung is a great prospect....but still a prospect. This one may not get solved for a while. Will Jung be the guy, or do we go make a big free agent signing? We made attempts at Arenado and Rendon last year. Man it would be nice to have one of them now. TBD.

LF - Not sure we have our long term guy in left yet. Dahl has been ok. Garcia played out there tonight, and he may just be the guy. Need a bigger sample. TBD.

CF - Was hoping Taveras would be ready. He's not. Garcia likely our best option there now. Eli White is a decent backup for all outfield positions. TBD.

RF - Gallo is locked in.

C - Trevino isn't bad. Is he the long term answer? I'm not ready to say that, but he has a shot. TBD

DH - I like Willie Calhoun. I'm gonna go out on a limb here and say he sticks.

So better than I expected to see. Lowe and Garcia have been the biggest surprises. Hope they can keep it up.

Starting pitching? This is a tough one. I think Gibson is a steady guy that could be a good #3 or #4 guy for a long time. Dunning has top of the rotation potential. Folty is ok. Lyles won't be here long. I'm not sold on Arihara yet. Maybe he could be a 4 or 5. We will obviously need a couple of top of the rotation guys going forward in my opinion.

Too many injuries to analyze the bullpen.

Thoughts? Should be fun to look back at these predictions at the end of the season.

The plan this year is for CJ to do about 100 games, Murphy about 40, and Grieve 20-25.

Good job by Dunning to rebound after that first inning. Feels like with the way they're handling him he's probably done for the day but I didn't think he would go 5 innings after the way the first went. Encouraging to see him able to respond like that

I think we'll know more in the next 2 weeks. If he ends up in Oakland with Andrus and Moreland... you know he is a good teammate/clubhouse guy. If he fails to sign-on with someone, then you know there are serious issues behind the scenes.

Youth movement? Going from 27yo Odor to 32yo Culberson?

Even if you buy into the fact the Rangers are going with Solak at 2B... Solak (26.078) is right at 1 yr younger than Odor (27.055).

Solak (26) has a career .277, 7HR in 91 Career MLB games
Culberson (32) has a career .249, 23 HR in 427 Career MLB Games
Odor (27) has a career .237, 146 HR in 858 Career MLB Games

I'd expect Solak's BA/OBP to plummet as he becomes the every-day 2B.

On the financial side... Odor has been paid only $23M in 6 seasons (less what players didn't get in 2020). The Rangers will pay him $24.6 to go away. In his 1st 5 years, he was paid $13M, averaging $2.7M. League min is like $522K. The expensive years are coming... and they are being paid while in his prime... and will be paid while he plays for another team, or stays home riding his 2 horses.

I could tell from about game #3 that IKF was big-leaguer. I don't mean all-star, but he has a Scott Fletcher/Rusty Greer approach to the game.

As for Solak, I liked what I HEARD from him. After his first few games, I liked the sound the ball made coming off his bat. Again, hard to describe, but I think he can play, and become a doubles machine. He reminds me of Knoblauch.

Now? His ERA sits at 2.16. He's been amazing since that opening day start.

I'm not at all convinced we'd get much for Gibson. Some borderline prospects most likely.

And that's not a knock on him or how he's pitching....it's a reflection of the market, there's a lot more sellers in baseball these days than buyers. Look at the Mets/Indians trade involving Lindor. He's a stud SS, and yet the Indians got relatively little in return for him.

IMO teams are beginning to place more emphasis & value on prospects, and I don't think we're going to see many (if any) more Texiera-type trades in the future. The Rangers are going to need to get a whole lot better at drafting and developing players in the minors than trying to pick up studs from other organizations.

With you 100% on the getting better at drafting and developing. Hopefully the addition of Young will help there. Still not totally clear on what his role is in that regard.

For Gibson, much like it was with Lance Lynn, a lot of his value is that he is signed through next season at a cheap rate for a starting pitcher ($7M for 2022). If he can keep pitching anywhere near they level he has been, maybe we can get something similar to Dunning that we got for Lynn. Or **gasp**, use some of our unspent money and actually extend him and have a decent pitcher to build a rotation around with the younger guys.
