That would certainly be the Occam's Razor approach, but I don't think Lost operates that way.

I think the kidnapped passengers will end up being the creepy whisperers we heard in the first two seasons.
I guess Im in the minority, I really liked this episode. The Others seem to insist on their goodness while ignoring the terrible things they've done. Perhaps they really are trying to save the race.
I liked it too. It wasn't one of the best or anything but it was a solid episode.
I think the Jack/Juliet dynamic is developing quite nicely. Is it all a trick to screw with Jack??
Also, it turns out Ben is going to be able to keep his word about sending Juliet and Jack "home."

I'm missing the point of Jack getting his ass kicked on the beach by those guys.
Episode was marginally good. Sawyer's cold hearted SOB schtick is getting old. Was Kate a dead lay and he decided he couldn't live with that? If not, there is no reason for him to brush her off like that. It's not like they're back in civilization and not going to see each other.

I gathered that the reason they beat him up was because him getting that tattoo was a big insult to something sacred in their culture.
As a whole I thought the point of the backstory might have been to show/reaffirm that Jack is a leader and a good person but that he sometimes has to take it on the chin, i.e. being in captivity, getting left behind by Kate and Sawyer.
Just a thought.
On a side note, when Jack got attacked on the beach, at least he got a couple punches in...

One of the small things that I loved about this episode that nobody mentioned was Jack only pressing the biscuit button twice, not the three times Sawyer pressed it.
I just thought that was an interesting contrast between the two characters.

the best part of this episode is that I came here to read other opinions about it and was treated to not only a return of Chip Taco, but a witty barb nonetheless

The creepy Other lady told him his tattoo translates to "He is not one of us." (or something to that effect) That is why the guys kicked his ass. Before Bai Ling put it on him, she said she saw him as a "born leader" (or something to that effect), so that is what we were supposed to assume the tattoo said, and why we were supposed to be confused about him getting his ass kicked.

The episode was very significant not only because the survivors and kids have been "watching" but Jack is apparently on Jacob's list because of his tattoos. Remember Jack was not on Jacob's original list then they saw his tattos and the Others realized they needed him.
Also I found it strange that the Tai kid ran away immediately seeing Jack after he got the tattoos. The strange part is the kid never saw his tattoo, he just knew.

so i skipped most of the 2nd half of season 2, and have been watching this season on and off and i have a question. where are michael and walt?

wow... the others kidnapped walt and michael went after him. meanwhile, at the hatch, rousseau caught Ben, who claimed to be someone else. Michael was caught by the others and said if he released Ben and broght them Hurley, Sawyer, Jack and Kate, they'd be set free. Michael killed Anna Lucia and Libby, and broght Hurley and Company to the others, and they were sent in a boat with certain coordinates.
That was one of the most frustrating episodes of LOST I've ever seen. I think they're starting to lose me as a fan.

No. We don't yet know how any of the Others arrived at the island.
Can't wait for a Ben/Henry Gale backstory.

was it really necessary to use his tattoos as part of the story? That tells me that the writers are just wasting time trying to fill up seasons.
Regarding Cindy and Jack, it is unlikely Cindy would remember Jack from the plane...he was one of many passengers. Remember it was Sawyer, Michael and Jin who were on the other side of the island.

I thought it was a good filler story.
Glad I didn't watch. Sounds boring as usual. I have been following it from day 1 and I am pretty sure I am done with this show.
