The coffin was Locke. Nobody cared for Locke because he was the only one who wanted to stay. Now that Jack is messed up he understands why Locke felt that way.

I thought it was flash ahead too, but the reference to his "father upstairs" kills it.
Didn't Kate kill her step father?? Do Jack and Kate have the same father, but different mothers?
Of course, that makes the whole first 3 seasons of the show kind of wierd b/c there's been this sexual tension between them.
He did say he loved her, but thinking back it was more of a "because I love you" like a brother moment, not a "love you" like the romantic kind.

I watched the 7 o'clock show with the producers that I assume also airred last thursday which I missed. For some reason I was really intrigued when one of the producers very oddly said in response to a comment by his co-producer "well if they got off the island then the show would be over....right?" I had a feeling when I heard that but It still surprised the hell outta me when it came true.
...but still way better than anything else on TV now that 24 has gone out of control.

i'm 100% certain its a flashforward. i'd consider it a major jumping of the shark if this is Jack and Kates second tour of duty on that island.
If someone got a screen shot of one of the multiple scenes where Jack was holding the newspaper article maybe the title would be visible.

I think Kate & Jack have already shared entirely too much lip-locking to be half siblings. That's just nasty. Plus, we already know Claire & Jack are half siblings. Jack and Kate too would be a little much.
I guess I can buy the idea of Jack losing it in reference to his father. I don't know. Still not 100% sure on that one.

Yeah, I couldn't remember if they had or not. If so then my theory is blown out of the water...not that it has much ballast to begin with.
Well if Jack's father was dead, wouldn't his body have been found by now since he was supposed to be on the plane that crashed? I'm guessing he's not dead.
Surely the "father upstairs" comment has a double meaning, indicating that his father is in fact dead and Jack has gone psycho.

The coffin was Ben's. Ben was the link to the island, alienated everyone (which is why there was nobody at his funeral) but Jack's strong feelings to get back to the island compelled him to stop by.
Christian Shepherd...alive....again!? I know the producers have debunked this before (by the way, can anyone pull up their specific wording when they said CS is dead?) but that is a great possibility.

The person in the coffin is Locke. For sure. LOST is all about parallels...in the flash forward Jack almost kills himself, and in the actual episode Locke almost does as well. Also, it's easy to see why Kate didn't like Locke he wants everyone to stay on the island so she's like hell no i don't want to go to his funeral. Lastly, Locke has no life or friends or family so he's the easy pick at who would have no one go to their funeral.

I'm so glad I stayed out of all Lost related threads and forums so I wasn't spoiled. I feel bad for people who were.

I thought the same thing, but then a friend reminded me that he was sure the only way Claire would be rescued was if he died down there. That explains it pretty well
