I always find it curious the stuff people get hung up on in a movie universe where some magical force helps people do things to begin with.

But seriously, no one knows who the old man at the start was? I figured he was an important character that I just didn't recognize but maybe not.

I got chills like none other when they zoomed in on rey after she force-grabbed the lightsaber

I got the impression that Ren was nothing more than a whiney little ***** that was still a noob that didn't know what he was doing and still making a lot of mistakes. He wore a helmet to cover up that he was not that intimidating.
But he did manage to destroy an entire school of young Jedi, so he does have the power. Plus being able to freeze people and even blaster shots is a whole new level

It's just that there's no consistency in the classification of this magical force. Read what the previous poster said. Took Luke, supposedly the best, a great deal of time to learn how to use the force well. Took Rey 30 minutes.

Von Sydow... I still think he was Kanan from rebels. He obviously knew Kylo and we are led to believe he was helping Luke train the next generation. I wonder if the book will clarify more about him?

For those of y'all that read the EU, did Ren come off a bit like Kyp?

Rey also reminded me of Kyp in the sense that she has a lot of raw talent with the force that she doesn't understand.

I know none of that is canon, but I definitely see parallels.

I think we can all agree that Ben Kenobi was GOAT.

Ren mentioned he had never felt someone with her level of power. Who knows, maybe she is the most powerful Jedi now. Looks like we just got wait and see

So the characters name is Lor San Tekka. Totally new and not connected with any other star wars media.

She did know how to use that staff....and Kylo was injured. Probably a little exaggerated but still believable.
Ren had been shot and was bleeding rather badly AND Finn had tagged him once or twice.

I don't believe they mentioned Rey's midichlorian count but I'll look again on the 2nd viewing.

Incredible movie. After first viewing, that is the best film of seven. Special effects were good. Cinematography was off the charts. You'd think they had real X-wings that were flying. Amazing. Great characters, old and new. Very funny too. And a really nice story with good plot lines.

I agree about 3D. Can we just kill this gimmick off? It stinks.

They really set it up for fantastic trilogy.

My view of Kylo Ren is that he's basically a brute with no real refinement to his abilities at this point. Think the opposite of Count Dooku. Every time he negatively reacts he's smashing **** up. In a universe with no Jedi or other Sith, he's obviously strong but he's probably really just a Padawan level trainee. There's also the fact that Snoke says he's going to complete his training at the end of the movie and I think killing Han was the key to open that door.

My view on Rey is that she's basically Force Jesus. I think she's so strong in the force that she can imprint skills to herself by mentally contacting other force users. That was my reading on the fight with Ren. She was doing OK and then tapped the force and seemingly knew all about fighting with a lightsaber.

I'm on these lines as well. She was able to reverse Ren's mind reading and use it against him.

Anyone surprised Luke looks like he has seen some ****. Granted, he was still feeling the effects of losing Han as well.

I agree about the Kylo... he's just a force strong guy that is out of control... once he kills Han, then Snoke agrees it's time to complete his training (AKA, turn him into a Sith Lord). With all the new stuff we've seen in Rebels, we know there are force users that are weapons (Inquisitors)... this is Kylo. Killing Solo was his turning point... or so Snoke think's.

Even before the movie I was 100% positive Kylo was a Skywalker and was pretty sure he was Leia's/Han's offspring... And I'm still pretty sure this trilogy will very much mirror the original in that one of the main goals is to turn a Skywalker back to the light side.

Watching Conan talk to Oscar Isaac. Isaac had asked Harrison Ford for some advice on how to "pilot" an X-wing on camera.

Ford: "well, its's fake..........and it's in space."

I also have a theory about the continuation of the Skywalker line.... I'm wondering if the friendship between Finn & Rey turns into romance. If it does it's interesting that Finn does not have a real name. I'm pretty sure Rey is Luke's kid and if Rey/Finn conceive a child as part of Disney's continuation of the Skywalker saga, it makes complete since for the child to assume the last name Skywalker because daddy ain't got no name.

And next movie.......can we please get some damn screen wipes between scenes? It's just not a Star Wars movie without transitioning scenes with a screen wipe.

Really enjoyed it. I like the kind of sibling rivalry between Hux and Ren. I was certain Hux was going to go down with the ship, but I'm glad this is a dynamic they can keep pushing forward.

Random ass theory about Rey: she's not Luke's daughter, she's a Leia clone. I really only say that because her being Luke's daughter just seems too obvious.

They were, but they were much cleaner... and without the sound that normally comes with them.

At least I think...

Wow. Just wow. So many comments so far say what I thinking, so I'll try to stick to new ones...

--Really want to know who Rey "won't find" that evoked her emotional reaction after the "dream."

--I saw a few wipes...but not a ton.

--What woke up R2? Rey? Luke via a distance?

--The Chewy/Leia non-contact at the end bugged me way more than Rey's sudden skills. How do those two not have a moment there?

--Kind of a "duh" but Rey seems primed to be "the chosen one" that Anakin never really was.

--Kylo has unrefined skill and a Skywalker temper that is being used. His mastering of some things that others haven't (stopping the blaster) while being unstable emotionally...like a talented adolescent.

--Who will be Rey's Mom?

Overall...a serious 9.9/10. So much done so well. The very last scene was lights out...and I think it's poignant that you're drawn in so strongly and then get the credits wipe and "Directed by JJ Abrams."

Will watch again soon...

Just got home. Holy balls that was great!

I saw a regular screening. I didn't want to fight the IMAX/3D lines plus I don't care for 3D. Now that I've seen it I want to see it again in IMAX.

My thoughts:
- there were some screen wipes. I remember them
- all the actors were great.
- Daisy will you marry me.
- yes CG squids were low point but other than hat visuals were fantastic.
- biggest compliant would of course be the retread plot. A 3rd Death Star? Really? But I like how they poked fun at it with Han saying "So it's just like the Death Star?" For about 5 minutes I sulked at the lack of originality and then I was RIGHT back in!
- I really just kept hoping it would have gone on for another hour or more!
- I got choked up a couple times from nostalgia and excitement

So good.

Count me in among those that would like more backstory about the old guy at the beginning at some point. I am wondering if he is like "old Ben" and watching out for Rey...

I also second the question about what made R2 wake up. Did he spend all his time in low power mode decrypting the map? Did Luke wake him up from a distance? Did Luke tell R2 to wake up if Rey ever showed up?

Other than that....wow....wow.....

Keep in mind...it is the Empire/First Order that lacks originality. It makes sense that they would just keep trying at it until they get it right.

I think we all knew it would happen, due to the fact that Harrison voiced his desire to kill him off in the OT. That being said, I'm still very sad.

The only gripes I have is no more Han, and the homogeneity of the star fighters. I would have loved to see a upgraded interceptor and/or A-wing tossed into the fights. It did a good job. It's the 3rd best of the 7.

Oh, rancors instead of squid aliens would have been neat.

Downsides... I could've used more of an emotional beat or two after Han death to let it sink in.

Finn descended a bit too much into comic relief. Captain Phasma was far too overhyped. Snokes design and CG was poor. The death star 3 and trench/interior was a little too on the nose.

That bring said, this might be better than ANH. maybe. ESB is still safely #1
