If you say Chicago has a young QB, then Houston also has a young QB and one who looks 1000x better than Chicago's

the Raiders are stuck with the classic quarterback conundrum.

Carr is a good QB, but he's not a great QB.

and 2022 will be his 9th year in the league

I believe that is called "getting Schaubed."

You're correct, but they don't have another QB on the payroll for $35MM next year whose status is a complete question mark. That variable in Houston is going to make it difficult to get any top level talent.

Another item to consider is cap situation for each team with an opening in 2022. Had I looked at it the tiers would be a bit different, New Orleans cap is out of control. $17MM for Houston isn't great, no idea how easy their deals would be to move/cut/restructure.

Per over the cap:

Miami - $70MM
Jacksonville - $59MM
Denver - $41MM
Chicago - $30MM
Las Vegas - $29MM
Houston - $17MM
NYG - ($7MM)
Minnesota - ($12MM)
New Orleans -($74MM)

Someone on 610 (not sure who it was) said it best yesterday when I tuned in.

It doesn't matter who they hire. If they think he's the man then fine. But it's the way the arrive at that decision. If they make a hire after interviewing just 6 people with 2 being Hines Ward and Josh McCown and without interviewing some of the top defensive and offensive coordinators then that's an issue.

Thought that was pretty spot on.

so has the NFL suddenly found its moral compass?

that just doesn't make sense.

I think Watson's massive contract is the #1 reason teams are hesitant

sort of... except Derek Carr has ended up being quite a bit better than both his older brother David and Matt Schaub.

The $35M question mark is temporary - he will be traded. I don't see that as an issue for the HC as well as he's not in control of personnel.

Houston's cap situation isn't bad. It's a bunch of dead cap hits from Mercilus/Cunningham/etc. that'll roll off after 2022. In 2023, the cap will be wide a** open at $149M with Watson and Tunsil on the books. Additionally, you can add $10M to the cap in 2022 if you cut Murray and Cannon.

All of this. This is a 3-5 year rebuild and you really can't pursue difference making free agents till next offseason, provided you nail this draft and develop the guys that came in last April's draft. Get rid of Watson this off-season, have a bad year record wise and pick in the top 10 again, … profit.

Arguably. But comparing the 2 wasn't my point. My point was the purgatory of a QB who's just good enough that you can't bring yourself to move on from them but not good enough to really ever succeed with them. And in the meantime, 10 years goes by.

Broncos to hire Packers OC, Nathaniel Hackett.
Bears to hire Colts DC, Matt Eberflus.

2 jobs down, 7 still open.

Sounds like Leftwich is the frontrunner in Jacksonville. I'd be cool with that.

See Leftwhich to JAC is pretty much a done deal.

Also hearing Dennis Allen is pretty much a given for NOLA.

So it's looking like that leaves only 5 openings.

And Jeff Fisher just agreed to become a coach in the USFL, so scratch him off our list as well.

He's more qualified than McCown, yet McCown got an interview.

Leftwich to Jacksonville makes a ton of sense, if true.
Dennis Allen getting promoted in NO makes sense too.

I'm guessing that with the Giants hiring anyone from Buffalo as their GM that it's going to be Daboll or Frazier, if that's the case that just leaves:

Houston
Miami
Las Vegas
Minnesota

If the chips are falling like this there's still a good chance this team makes a quality HC hire, but I won't believe it until I see it. Flores is still out there, Bieniemy, Bowles, either of the Buffalo coordinators that NYG doesn't hire, I still hope we ask DeMeco Ryans for an interview. I still don't know enough about the Philly DC to have a read on him, all I know is I work with a couple of Philly fans and they don't seem to care about losing him.

Nick has been on the road the last 3 days.

Interviewed O'Connell then flew to Philly to interviewed Gannon and then Florida for Flores.

To be fair, we haven't heard much of anything. I think there'll be a lot of dominos ready to fall, but my guess is this may not happen until after this week or the Super Bowl.

O'Connell would be a nice hire

That LA offense is really well run and creative. Wouldn't mind some of those concepts implemented.

I like this. I don't know how well any of those guys would do running the Texans, but all three of them seem to be serious candidates at least.
