Somebody should really tell Cal that there are other franchises that have coaches to hire besides the Pats.

Yeah, hire a guy who has absolutely no experience.

I want to cry. They can't seriously be thinking about a hiring a head football coach who had NEVER COACHED A GAME!!!!

Only the Texans.

If they do this, they should be contracted from the league for not being a serious franchise. At this point, I'm on board with ANYBODY other than McCown. What a complete and total joke.

The guys on 610 have been talking for the past few days as if he's already been hired. I don't know if they're just assuming he will be, or speculating what it would be like if he is, or what, but they sound like they think it's gonna happen. Some of them seem more optimistic about how it would go than others.

I don't think McCown would be a great hire but it also could be worse.

I don't think it could. Is there any self-respecting coordinator or assistant coach who is going to want to work for a guy who has paid no dues and has not put in the years of grueling hours that they have? It's an absolute clown show if they do this...this is akin to trading Hopkins for the ghost of David Johnson. If they love McCown so damn much, that is fine...hire him as your QB coach. I know McCown is well-liked and well-respected. Fine. Give him a start...you don't give him the head job.

I can't begin to say how insulting this would be to other coaches. This isn't "thinking outside of the box." This is just stupid and arrogant. Of course, that seems to be how the Texans roll.

I don't understand why head coach is the only position McCown seems to be considered for. Does that come from McCown? Is he telling them he'll only consider a head coaching position? If so, why on earth would he think that? If it's the Texans, why exactly are they not looking at him for QB coach or something similar? He could cut his teeth and you could find out what you have in him. Just makes no sense to only be considering him for head coach.

The wiki summary of McCown's coach career -

McCown previously spent time as a volunteer quarterbacks coach for the Marvin Ridge High School Mavericks of Waxhaw, North Carolina.[141][293][3][294][147][295] The team's head coach said "He just walked into my office one day and asked if he could help out."[3] In 2010, prior to signing with the Colonials, McCown began helping the Mavericks during the offseason.[296][294] After the 2010 UFL season ended, McCown spent another offseason volunteering with the Mavericks.[296][3] He then left the school upon being signed by the 49ers in August 2011 but returned once the 49ers released him in September 2011.[296][3] Several days after Marvin Ridge lost its playoff game in November 2011, McCown was signed by the Bears.[3] McCown was released by the Bears in August 2012 and immediately upon arriving home at the airport, McCown went straight to a Marvin Ridge game and joined the team while the game was in progress.[297][3] Similarly, days after Marvin Ridge lost its playoff game in November 2012, McCown was again signed by the Bears. McCown also spent time as the scout team quarterback while at Marvin Ridge, with one player saying "I don't think anybody in the country had a better scout-team quarterback."[3] McCown also cooked pancakes for the Fellowship of Christian Athletes breakfasts on Fridays and spent time teaching gym class at Marvin Ridge.[3][298][299]

McCown is assistant coach at Rusk High School in Texas where his sons play. With his 2019 return to the NFL, the Eagles allowed him to fly to Charlotte on Mondays for high school practice and game planning, and then again on Fridays for game days.[300]

Hilarious that this is the resume of the guy they may hire as head coach.

Nothing the Texans do makes sense. They are the most bass ackwards organization in the NFL. What a freaking joke.

How can it get worse than a guy with literally zero coaching experience?

The biggest red flag against McCown is his apparent belief that he's qualified to be a head coach in the NFL despite never doing anything more than sporadic volunteer coaching at a neighborhood high school. It's either the height of arrogance or stupidity for him to think he's ready. Neither bode well.

I think this serves 2 main purposes.

1) McCown is an Easterby guy who fits his culture

2) Allows Caserio to keep control and be able to be as hands on as he wants

However, I do see McCown as someone who can bridge the gap between FO and players. Something I have a feeling Culley failed at miserably

As long as McCown assembles a strong supporting staff, I don't think he'll be all that bad. He seems to be a good leader and smart. I would bet he could pick up the duties fairly quickly. At the end of the day, talent is this team's biggest issue.

He won't be worse than Culley or half the other coordinators that get hired, fail, and get fired a few years later. I think there are currently 5 coaches who have a tenure with their current team of at least 5 years.

Should have kept Culley.

They have to hire McCown because nobody wants to coach for them. They didn't even want McCown last year and now he is magically a better option? Nope...they are out of options. Literally scraping the bottom of the trashcan. If they held on to Culley for a few years and pick up a few more blue chippers, they probably land a better HC.

Lol!!! The texans way. Have a candidate thats the OC for one of the better offeneses. Or a candiate with 0 nfl coaching experience but is part of FCA. Makes sense to pick option 2. These has easterbys hands all over the hire. No way caserrio would go for mcnown right?

Are you related to Culley?

That's the only thing I can think of as to your love of David Culley as a HC.

If you're just going to hire a guy with no college or professional coaching experience, might as well have kept Culley instead of paying him $22MM for 1 season

McCown is a better candidate than Culley.

McCown played around the league for 17 years --- that's a lot of NFL experience.

he's seen the best and worst of everything
W

and as others have said...

the top candidates are not going to commit to the Texans while other jobs in the league are still open.

McCown may be the best the Texans can do

By that logic, we should give the job to Shane Lechler.

Sad part is, I may actually like that idea better.

It's going to be McCown. This is really his third interview. And it's my eternal optimism that I will hope it works out, but it's a strange hire.

Culley has 27 years experience coaching in the NFL, that's a LOT more NFL experience.

It gives me some optimism that McCown is well respected and thought of as an up and comer in coaching ranks.

Culley had been around 50 years and never moved up past a WR coach. Plus he sucked ass and was fired.

By who? He's never had a coaching job. Never heard of an up and comer who never actually had a job.

I've heard/read a lot of 'He'll be a good HC someday' about McCown even dating back to when he was playing.

McCown may also be a less costly option at HC. Perhaps Caserio can structure a deal with incentives that if he does well, he gets paid. If he doesn't, it's not a $22M guaranteed payment.

May be less risky if they can do this.
