No, because of not moving other spare parts for draft capital. I'm good with hanging on to Watson and trying to create a market for him in the offseason. But there is no reason for this team to have made only one trade today. Akins, Cooks, Cunningham and probably several others should have been moved.

I'm surprised Cunningham isn't on the move. I remember Cooks saying if he's traded again he will just retire. Perhaps he meant it.

Cunningham's contract makes it very hard to move him. His cap hit is as at least ~$15M for 2022 - 2024.

Akins is not of a caliber that would put a contender over. He'd likely be a backup or 2nd option and is a FA after this season. Can't imagine a big market.

Cooks not being dealt was a bit surprising. But maybe this was similar to the Deshaun situation - Caserio setting a precedent that if you try to lowball, there is no deal.

This. Someone asked earlier what the difference between Rodgers and Watson was. Rodgers issues with ownership/management were centered around wanting a better team. Watson, as I thought may be the case, was more interested in lifestyle/branding, not football.

------
that's one reason why the Giants seem like a good fit. It's New York City.

but someone in the NYG front office must want nothing to do with him.

also bad for Watson...the L.A. teams are set at QB: Rams with Stafford and Chargers with Herbert

Even though it would cripple the franchise and never happen, part of me wishes they would stop talking about him completely and just have him on the roster doing absolutely nothing until the end of 2025. Just make him the biggest nothing of all time, albeit a rich one.

So the franchise is probably crippled until at least 2025 whether they do that or not.

it is wild...that all this started in January (trade request)...and here we are 10 months later in November...and nothing has changed.

Easterby is still in the front office. Watson is still a Texan

Vernon Hargreaves gets the axe today.

Sounds like its time to start playing the young guys to see what they got.

also this is an important game to lose.

Miami is direct competition for a top 3 or top 5 pick

Let's hope with the uncertainty of a trade looming now done for the season, Tua balls out the rest of the way!

This why I expect them to ball out and tyrod throw for 400 and 4 TDs

By the end of the season, they need to tell Watson that they will make a good faith effort to trade him prior to the 2022 season, but that that is unlikely to happen as long as all of his legal issues are still unresolved. Apparently, Watson made a lot of headway in getting that done when he thought he might go to Miami. If they are unable to trade him before the season, he will be expected to report AND PLAY for the Texans in 2022.

Hopefully, that lights a fire under him. He seems to think he is going to get everything his way. Texans can't be expected to pay a guy that much to not play indefinitely.

Is Watson being paid his full pay while he is not playing?

Given that, I don't think there is any real way to incentivize him doing anything he is not predisposed to doing.

He's getting paid an astronomical amount of money to do nothing. He doesn't make any more money if he plays.

Indirectly, he would. He lost a lot of sponsorships with the legal issues and him not playing doesn't help him gain them back. Your point that his paycheck wouldn't be any different one way or another is valid, but he needs football to improve his reputation/likeness and gain additional sponsorships.

It seems as if there is some sort of under-the-table agreement between the Texans/NFL to not play him. if the Texans don't play him, the NFL doesn't have to worry about suspension or exempt list. Yes, the NFL said they wouldn't do anything at this time, but push comes to shove, I'm not sure they'd do it. I'd bet that, somehow, the Texans get something out of it from the NFL. Obviously not an NBA lottery fix type "something", but I have to think the Texans wouldn't agree to this for nothing as it is costing them.

One would hope, and the assumption would be it would be monetary assistance to help pay Watson's contract.

That said, with current ownership there is no telling.

I'm personally perfectly fine letting Watson rot on the bench. Yeah you're paying him but you've already budgeted for that anyways.

As for Watson his incentive to play is to showcase himself for other teams. If were to go out and ball and show how valuable he is then maybe some teams would be more willing to take him and his issues on.

Guessing the NFL can't do anything because no criminal charges are filed. Until then he's not their problem.

he just turned 26 in September. If push came to shove, the Texans could make it so he doesn't play another down of professional football until he is 31 years old. This may be the rare case where the McNairs' total incompetence is paying off because they are letting the GM run the show on this. He's got no ties to Watson, he knows even if Watson was in prime time condition tomorrow that the Texans still would maybe go 5-12, so that guy isn't even checking his watch or the calendar - he's got an asset, he's got all the time in the world to wait for the right trade partner.

It sort of reminds me of the episode of the Office where Stanley acts like he's taking another job, Michael panics because he can't offer him more money, eventually Stanley caves in and then questions if Michael is some sort of secret genius. The Texans are so terrible, have years to go on rebuilding, and their owners already committed to the guy's contract, so they zero motivation to do anything until they're ready to.

So with Taylor starting I guess they have a decent shot at beating Miami and hurting their draft position
