If Lovie can build a great defense I will be very happy. I thought they clearly improved on that side of the ball as the season went on despite a real lack of talent.

Trying to put things in place so more qualified African American coaches get a shot a job they deserve is not making it worse. There are only 2 black head coaches in the NFL u cannot deny that sorry. It's a problem

you're missing the entire point....Why does the whole "need more minority coaches" only matter if you're 100% black? Do asians, mexicans, spaniards, etc not matter?

What makes a 100% fully black coach "deserve" an interview over a mexican coach?

It is absolutely racist to implement a rule making teams interview a "person of color" when the only color that matters is being full black.

I personally believe their isn't a NFL owner who gives a **** what color their head coach as long as he wins. Winning=money. And we all know the owners want more $ anyway possible. How about hiring the most qualified candidate regardless of race and gender?

the trick will be avoiding the regression-to-the-mean with regard to forcing turnovers.

the Texans were a top 10 defense in that category in 2021...with 25 forced turnovers in 17 games.

and as a result finished ranked 12th (of 32 teams) in turnover margin

Can we also make a rule that every team must carry a white running back and an Asian wide receiver? How about a South American middle linebacker? When is the league going to wake up about how passionate Bolivians are for the 4-2-5 defense?

If I was an owner, which will never, ever happen, my response to the media would be, "Guess what? I paid $1 billion for this ***** I'm hiring whoever I think is going to win me a GD Super Bowl."

Or alternatively hire a blind, lesbian, Middle Eastern woman in a wheelchair to be head coach for a season to check all the boxes at once, then fire her a year later for gross incompetence and get back to trying to win football games.

There is zero doubt in my mind that someone from the NFL called Cletus McNair and said "Hire another black guy or else."

So now that the coaching change has been made when is the Watson legal situation supposed to get moving again? Was it this month or later?

I don't think one has anything to do with the other. I believe a number of depositions have been taken but I haven't been following it closely. Also, sounds like settlement discussions have been ongoing.

IIRC they sounded like they were close but the plaintiffs wouldn't sign NDA's, which was a deal breaker for Watson. I'm assuming that's still the case.

it's amazing that both Easterby and Watson are still here -- still in the Texans organization

I feel like I heard on the radio a while back that Watson could go to court, or hearing, something like that next week? Don't hold me to that though.

I thought there were rumblings that his case was to presented to a grand jury late Jan/early Feb.

When does the new league year start? Because it gets interesting when his new salary kicks in and it then becomes VERY expensive to keep him around.

No idea if there is a hearing on the Court's docket but an actual civil trial is still likely years away. While I think its technically set for trial later this year, I would be shocked if it actually went to trial then. And I'm not sure how they plan on trying these; i.e., individually or as a group. And I'll edit to add that this is a no-win situation for him. Try them individually and he's looking at 20 different trials. All expensive, all covered by the media, all with different juries. That's 20 different times he can lose. But at least they are one-on-one he said/she said. Try them together and you have 20 women telling very similar stories. They can argue that this is just a coordinated money grab, but 20 people testifying to the same thing against one person denying it is pretty powerful.

And I'll stand by my prediction that there is no way Watson will actually try these cases. He will eventually settle them, but will have wasted a couple of the most valuable years of his life in the process. Don't know if he got bad advice or ignored the good advice he was given, but he's made an absolute mess of this.

Back when all the Watson stuff started I recall reading a report about how he could have avoided all of the mess he's in now by settling and it wouldn't have even been made public. His side chose to let it be made public. The initial settlement was miniscule too. Hindsight and all that, but things would be so different now had he chosen that path.

Has David Muhlugheta written all over it. Seems like he believes in strong arming and "winning" rather than being smart.

Unfortunately, he severely underestimated how stubborn and theatrical Tony Buzbee can be.

As I recall, Watson's team wasn't even familiar with who Buzbee was when it first came in and thought he was some two-bit ambulance chaser. Critical error to not even investigate your opposition.

Watson's team was very familiar with who Buzbee is. I can assure you of that.

Watson set for deposition 2/22.

This was what I was thinking of. Buzbee clearly didn't think they were familiar with him. If they did know who he was, they played it very poorly.

Whether they did or didn't, the original $100k settlement offer sure seems to be an ounce of prevention for the pound of cure needed now.

Who's to say Buzbee wouldn't have found others and hindsight is 20/20, but man...

one small issue with hiring Lovie...

what if he's actually able to get the Texans to 6 or 7 wins.

that would mean picking around #8 or #9 in the 2023 draft...which is supposed to be much better for QB's
Texan_Aggie

Depends on how they do it. If Mills shows promise, not an issue. If Mills is average/below-average, that'd mean you probably have a pretty good team around him.

I think in that circumstance, you go the LA/TB route and build a super strong team and try to cherry pick a QB.

That's not unique to Lovie. Plus, if we win 6-7 games, it likely means Mills continued to progress. And it likely means Lovie is doing a good job. Neither of which are actually issues or concerns.

it's going to take a little while.

he only played in 4 playoff games.

and the Texans ran the ball a ton in the redzone with Kubiak/Foster

So dumb

If you're worthy of the HOF you're worthy of the HOF.

You're credentials aren't changing. First ballot, second ballot, whatever ballot.

He will make it eventually. Many WRs don't make it on their first ballot. I wonder if Watson has considered this season could cost him and another sit out season would probably end any hall of fame possibility.

Agreed, he'll get there though, I'm confident. I'm surprised Ware didn't get in as well, but he'll get there too.

At least the football HOF doesn't have the same issues as baseball when it comes to the HOF.

There is a popularity aspect to most hall of fame selections. David Ortiz took steroids and got caught but made the Baseball HOF on first ballot. He's Big Poppy. Clemons and Bonds didn't because they are not well liked. A Rod won't make it. But Andre Johnson will make it eventually.

there's a backlog at WR:

with Andre, Torry Holt, Steve Smith, and Reggie Wayne.

it was great to see Cliff Branch finally make it (via the veterans committee)

Remember that time when the Lions drafted in front of us and they drafted Charles Rogers instead of Andre Johnson?

Remember that time we had the first pick in the draft and we could have anyone we wanted to start the franchise and we picked David Carr instead of Julius Peppers?
