I could be wrong, but if they are in any way considering a release at some point it would likely be tied to potential criminal charges. I would think there's language in his contract that allows his contract to be voided, and also the ability to recoup signing bonus if there's criminal charges of a certain degree. If they release before anything like that then they're on the hook for all the guaranteed money, and he can then go where he wants. Jumping the gun and releasing him could be way worse financially than waiting this out. It feels like the organizations hands are completely tied until this matter is resolved.Texan_Aggie said:
Dead cap if cut before June 1 is $51.2M and after is $40.4M, which is the same as his cap hit of $40.4M if he's on the roster.
At some point, Texans will have to decide whether he is a worthless asset or not weighing the legal with potential suitors. He becomes very cheap to cut starting in 2023. If there are no trade partners before June 1, it seems to me given its the same cap hit to keep or cut, and it may just be better for the Texans to move forward without him.
I'm not rooting for or against Watson in this situation, I don't know exactly what he did or didn't do. I do wonder how long Buzbee wants to drag this out because his clients aren't getting paid while this thing is in limbo. Feels like there's a point of diminishing returns for both sides of this, hard to see either side truly winning the longer it stretches out. Watson has lost a year of his career, and the accusers haven't seen anything financially while this case is still pending. Perhaps the clients consider finding other representation if they don't see some movement here.
