Really hope that Texans hold on to Pep, whomever the head coach turns out to be. He clearly did good work with Davis Mills and another year with him would be valuable.

Would Pep as the next stop gap HC be a bad idea?

Just fire Culley and give the reigns to Pep. Let him make a new OC hire and he can work with Mills and run the whole damn thing until the ship is turned around.

At least, the Texans need to promote Pep to OC, get rid of Tim Kelly.

Pep is ready.

I regret that I have but 1 blue star to give this post.

The more I think about it and looking at Pep's resume I think him as the next HC would be a good move.

He can still have his hands on the offense and work with Mills.

He's 47 right now so use this a tryout and if he works out then he could possibly be the long term HC. If not then he babysits better than Culley, develops Mills, and hands it over to the guy Caserio selects in 2 years.

i wonder if Harbaugh to Vegas is close to a done deal.
Vegas is dumb if they don't just promote their interim coach, guy has completely turned that around

Would love to see the Texans trade down in this draft and accumulate some more high end draft capital. Would also love to see them hire Brian Flores.

It's going to be tough in this draft to sell off a high pick for future picks.

So far the Texans have:

  • Blocked both the Lions and Panthers requests to interview Tim Kelly for OC
  • Not blocked Carolina's request to interview Pep Hamilton
  • Have not scheduled a meeting between Culley and Caserio/Cal to discuss future.

Sounds like they're going to run it back.

So if the Texans were to hire Brian Flores, what are the chances it would help with the Watson situation? I know Watson was interested in going to Miami because of Flores, and God knows Houston loves their ex-Patriot coaches...
SgtBarbarossa
How long do you want to ignore this user?
That is barring the sexual assault charges but if Vick, Roethlisberger, Ray Lewis, etc could come back from various allegations, Watson probably can, too

I can't imagine there is any chance Watson chooses to stay at this point, Flores or not. That is also a question more suited for Bilbob. Would be an incredible turn of events though if we got Flores and Deshaun all of a sudden wanted to stay

I'm in the camp that doesn't believe anything should be done to placate Watson. If he wants to play for Flores then we can trade him wherever Flores ends up.

When did the narrative shift from "He wants to be in Miami" to "he wants to play for Flores"?

I'm not buying anything about Watson stories until it's permanently inked.

I agree, and I'm just spit-balling based on random reports. I'm pessimistic enough that whatever the smart play seems to be… I expect the opposite from Houston's front office.

My favorite Texans moment of the year: Watching BOB get exposed during the NCAA national title game.

I think that's just a narrative the Texans are putting out to grow a market and suitor base for D4. If more teams think "they have a chance", I think they Texans get more offers and can try to drive a bidding war as opposed to working a deal with only one team.

I don't think I would take less than 3 first rounders for Watson at this point, ideally more than that. I still can't get over what we gave up in that Tunsil trade...

also...when did the narrative shift that Flores was a great coach?

he's 24-25 in 3 years and never made the playoffs

Why can't we just draft Will Anderson Jr? If we could draft anyone in all of college football this year I'd take him, and yet he's gotta wait another year. That guy looks as NFL ready as anyone ever has been and he's just a sophomore. I'd love it if we could land him in the 2023 draft.

I don't see anyone claiming he is great, but he's the first guy to win in Miami in a long time.

I'm not sold on anything about Culley except the fact that when he chews gum he looks like king hippo in NES Mike Tyson's punch out.

But this rebuild needs 2 more drafts beyond this one and we need to be picking high in those drafts. This team needs to build the lines and secondary then get skill players and that's going to take 2-3 drafts. Then you try to get that QB and roll into years 4-5 while he's getting better for a playoff push.

I am not sure the Texans have the balls to do this.

If they select anything but OL, DL, or DB at the top of this year's draft we'll know the front office is fully a dumpster fire and we're in for a 5-8 year slide.

I thought this year went pretty well reducing payroll liabilities. Cunningham deal was dumb as can be but outside of that not too much to complain about.

One thing in this draft is for sure. The Texans are taking the annual flyer on a tight end with one of their middle round picks

Culley cut him a few weeks back.

Deal was BOB. Could have traded him for assets.

Flores inherited a 7-9 Dolphins team from the year before (2018).

the Bills, Cardinals, 49ers, Bengals, and Raiders...all had worse records in 2018...

but 3 years later...their coaches got them to the playoffs

Hell no they couldn't have traded him.

He was being paid like one of the best LBers in the league. No one wanted to take on that contract.

He's a good player and deals get made. I 100% believe he could have been leveraged for picks this year instead of eating the contract the way they did.

Nope. The Titans were near the end of the waiver wire...he almost cleared waivers. With that albatross of a contract, he was worth nothing. I'm not sure that anybody other than Mike Vrabel would have taken him on. I don't like eating that contract either, but nobody was going to give us anything for a mediocre player getting paid like an All-Pro.

And apparently a decision on Culley has not yet been made.

Doubt he gets the axe but there's always a chance until it becomes official.

Idk. It seems like they are trying to line up another coach ie Flores. The longer they say nothing, the more I think they are discussing details with their next coach.

In the last 10 seasons, Miami has had 3 winning seasons. Flores was responsible for two of them.

Flores wasn't fired for his record. He was fired because he was butting heads with the GM.

IDK about that. NYG said they were keeping their coach and then canned him a few days later

When a coach is flat out dominated by a division rival, he needs to be gone.

Sure he figured out how to beat the patsies but, the pats don't run that division anymore.
