I really do think it's casting. They would have bad to bring back Thoros and Catelyn for a 30 second clip, whereas next season they can just put them both back on contract and integrate them into the entire season (I assume in Brienne's storyline).

Kind of disappointed with this episode. Felt a bit rushed, and the way they hyped it up, was expecting a bit more.

Still solid and entertaining.

i agree from a book readers perspective it is not perhaps the impact of the books....

but i think all in all this was a fantastic season especially from vieweres perspective.

whereas

season 1 was pretty much political wrangling, outbreak of war, danys dragons and Ned Stark dying..

season 2 was pretty much full scale war, blackwater and the intro of white walkers

season 3 was north of the wall, more war, some dany kicking butt and the unsullied, and the red wedding

season 4 gave us
joffrey and the purple wedding
the trial and tyrions speech
lyssa and the moon door
the mountain and the viper
the battle on the wall (giants and wooly mammoths and the scythe) plus stannis to the rescue
brienne vs. the hound
and tyrions revenge

i think it delivered more than any season before it

I'm going to take the opposite opinion for a second: I'm glad we didn't get LSH. One, I didn't particularly like it in the books - my gut reaction was "oh crap are these books about to jump the shark?" Two, she didn't amount to much in the next two books. It's essentially the same as the big "the White Walkers are coming!!!" cliffhanger from Season 2... which as we all know, amounted to almost nothing. This would more or less be the same.

Three, closing a book like that leaves one to wonder and wait in anticipation until the next book. Closing a season like that leaves one to ask their book-reading friend, or google spoilers online. It'd probably just be confusing, more than anything. Especially since the Brotherhood hasn't appeared in about 13 episodes.

Four, contract issues / filming schedules etc. that have been mentioned by others.

Just my two cents. Book readers seem pretty adamant that we need LSH ASAP... but I guess there's no rush, is there? We hardly got Tyrion in this episode, and it was already the longest ever.

Anyway, not a bad ep, for all the book changes (Jojen's death, Brienne vs. Hound, no Tysha)... all of which seemed reasonable and tastefully done, IMO.

So Tyrion isn't mad at Jaime. Oh well.

Tysha would have confused the hell out of casual viewers. Shae was much more important to Tyrion as far as the show is concerned. And that's ok.

Exactly.

"By the way, brother - remember my old wife I may have mentioned in Season 1 - more than 3 years ago? She was a *****, right?"

"No."

I'm with most of you guys I don't miss LSH and Black hands or whatever GRR calls the friendly wight.

I liked how the death of the Hound as well as the fight scene for Bran were portrayed... much better IMO.

i'm still on the fence on whether jojen's death was a "change". i'm not on board 100% with jojen-paste but i do think it's pretty clear he died while bran and co. are camped out at bloodraven's tree

there were some great parts of this episode (seeing Tyrion kill Tywin, Arya taking the Hound's maoney and leaving him to die, etc.)

but overall, I was extremely disappointed

-no LSH? 30 second clip at the end would have been absolutely perfect. I'd been waiting for LSH all season, so was very sad to not have her in tonight's episode

-Tyrion and Jaime's relationship is COMPLETELY changed now from the books. I understand it would have been difficult for the casual viewer to understand the Tysha reference, but that still would have been better than having them leave on good/loving terms.....gah

-COTF are literally children? OK....comes off as lazy to me

-Jojen dying = spoiler. although at the point where all the stories are in the series spoilers are starting to pop up everywhere, so I guess I can't get too upset about that. just very shocking to me (although he's clearly on his last legs in the books, was not expecting him to get stabbed/killed by sister/torched by COTF)

-no "where do *****s go?"

-again, no LSH

what I really liked from this episode

-the wights outside of the COTF cave. holy cow those things were badass!!!!!

-Arya and the Hound's last scene. fantastic.

-Tyrion/Shae. that bit was very much straight out of the book, and it translated very well to the screen. no words. just strangled her. loved that he did it with the necklace he had given her, instead of the hand of the king pin like I thought he would

so did Varys board Tyrion's ship? I couldn't tell if he was sitting on the ship or just sitting on the docks...

If I recall, varys gets out of KL in the books. He is suspected as one of the jailors who sprung tyrion.

Then there was something about finding a tyrell gold coin in the jailers quarters...

Seriously, if I were Meera, my first question for ol' Leaf would have been, "Hey, where were you with the fireballs of skeleton killing 5 minutes ago when they were hacking the crap out of us?"

Thought the skeletons' movement was a very subtle nod to the original Jason & the Argonauts.

Wasn't crazy about Brienne vs. Hound but loved Arya leaving him to die.

Tyrion felt rushed, but glad they left in Tywin's "You shot me!"

Really surprised they didn't include Lady Stoneheart. Credits rolled with 8 mins left on my recording and I thought for sure she was going to get a short scene.

I never bought the Jojen paste theory, and seeing him die kind of sucked. Glad Meera made it, that would have pissed me off.

The only change from Varys is that show Varys seems caught off guard with his almost going back, while book Varys basically almost engineered the assassination of Tywin.

Was really hoping for a LSH ending.

The Jojen death makes me think the Jojen Paste theory is correct.

My thought is, the producers knew having Bran eat Jojen wouldn't fly with viewers, so they went ahead and got rid of his character this way.

I never bought it b/c Martin has pretty much always killed characters off explicitly. Jojen dying and being ground into paste out of 'view' would be a major departure from that style, imo. Which is why the Hound being alive and Jon being alive seem so likely, to me.

So, I guess Balon Greyjoy is as good as dead for episode 1 next season.

Yeh I thought that too. Odd. Do you think they'll have Varys stick with Tyrion in the show now? Or will he disappear same as before until he shows back up to kill Kevan?

The Tysha narrative omission also annoyed me, mostly just because they removed the line "wherever *****s go!"

Overall this episode was kind of lacking, but I'm definitely in agreement it was so far, the best season to date.

Epilogue so for each season:
1-rebirth of dragons
2-white walker reveal
3-Mysa with the slaves
4-Arya exit from Westeros

I agree LSH should have ended the season. it would give that, "holy crap I cannot wait for next season!!!"

This episode deserved to be split in 2...

Think the show watchers are ready for 2 books worth of plot building?

Didn't Tyrion meet up with Varys before he murders Shae and Tywin in the books? I felt like it was a bit rushed. He was in his cell and then he was in Tywin's room.

Agreed. Jaime said Varys was at the top of the stairs. Then he ends up in Tywin's rooms? Did they cut a scene?

Didn't really care for the episode, as others have stated, it felt rushed. Also, I'm very surprised they didn't draw out the Bran storyline more, considering they added that random Craster's keep part. And it seems that Varys hears the bells, realizes what Tyrion has done, and takes off in the ship, as well. That is a huge change, and I hope they have a cohesive storyline for him, as I'm assuming he takes the place of Illyrio which I'm still not sure how they are going to do that. Also, who is going to kill Kevan Lannister, or is there even going to be a Kevan Lannister as it appears they might be omitting several significant characters (although I don't see how they can get rid of Kevan unless they decide to give Cersei some of his plotlines).

Mark me down as disliking the wights outside Bloodraven and the Children's cave. Wights are known to be slow, clumsy and unstoppable except for by burning. These things were like skeleton monsters from a video game.
