Seeing as this is confirmed to be the shooting script - meaning the draft the filmmakers agreed was ready to film, and that Warner Bros greenlit to film - I'm assuming everything in this draft was shot. I obviously haven't read it yet, but I'm betting there are a decent number of shot-but-cut scenes/convos throughout...

Well, then that suggests what we saw is, in fact, potentially not the Directors cut that DV said we get in the theater.

A "shooting script" is only one, early pit stop in a long race that sees tune-up after tune-up until the finish line is finally crossed (i.e. releasing the movie to theaters). "Shooting scripts" are continually rewritten during production, and then the movie takes even more shapes during editing. For instance, I just noticed that the scene where there's an assassination attempt on Paul's life in his room on Arrakis isn't even in this draft. So that was something they likely added after filming began.

Think of the "shooting script" like an initial, handshake agreement to officially finance the film, everyone's happy with the "deal," etc, but the "negotiations" don't stop there. If only because certain missing beats aren't realized until filming has begun, or things aren't working on set like they do on the page, and scenes/dialogue have to be changed on the fly, etc.

All of this is to say, the film DV released in theaters *is* his director's cut. In other words, just because his final iteration ended up being different from his initial iteration doesn't mean we didn't get the exact film he intended to make.

As of today, Dune is available to buy digitally and rent digitally. But still a little over five weeks until it's available to own on Blu-ray (January 11th), at which point I imagine these prices will likely drop…

I'm sure the visuals of this movie has already been discussed at length on this thread. I know that as a photographer, I left the movie thinking it was one of the most beautiful looking films I've ever seen. This video came up on my YouTube feed and thought it was worth a share for anyone interested in this aspect of the movie.

So good. Thanks for posting.

Just finished watching Dune this weekend. I must say, this was not one to waste money on in theaters.

Timothy Chalmet was absolutely flat as Paul. This was always going to be a tough role due to all the inner monologues from the novel. It took me a few minutes but I soon realized Tim was copying Nicholas Cage in 8MM. Same deadpan acting. One movie was about a pedo who wanted to watch a girl die in porn. The other is about a young noble avenging his family and potentially unlocking some mystical powers via psychotropic sand dust.

Zendaya was a terrible Chani. I liked her better as Phantom Phreak in Hackers.

The rest of the cast was pretty much great, but so much talent was wasted on so little screen time in a movie that was way too choppy and felt like it ended too abruptly. Shocked this passes for best editing in 2022, but I generally stay awesome from movies.

Jason momoa: great portrayal of Duncan. Just about the right screen time given his sparse appearances in the novel.

Brolin did a great job as gurney.

The guy who played thufir… I didn't hate him and actually liked his character in the movie but could have used more screen time and delving into the mentat function for the atreides. He was probably my biggest surprise like.

Piter wasn't as bad as I thought but he didn't get much time to screw anything up.

Leto was bad ass, but still sort of bland.

Stilgar felt like he was used in the right amount to be mysterious enough to make you want to see more of in Dune 2 by a lot.

It was criminal to have a badass like stellan skarsgaard in a visually masterful portrayal of one of the most spooky movie/novel villains ever and not give him more memorable scenes. He was a fat floating blob who took an oil and balsamic vinegar bath after clinging to the ceilings after the tooth.

Liet was a big fail, but that was expected since the gender was unnecessarily changed.

Mohiam was forgetful but well cast.

Jamis was well done but didn't have enough time to develop.

No surprise that rose the hat was spot on. No complaints at all there.

Rabban didn't get enough time to become the beast he really was in the novel.

Yueh was cast well but I never felt like he was utilized properly. His motivation was an afterthought.

Aside from the misuse of the cast, my other gripes would be:
- Not expanding on how interstellar travel works
- Not introducing the emperor
- the sandworm that Paul confronted felt like gaspporn: too big but probably was meant to detract from huge misses on character development
- whatever the physics-defying trope is called that was used in the sandstorm… just too unbelievable even for a far-future fantasy space opera.

What the film got right:
- Arrakis and Arrakeen looked like I thought they should
- sardaukar were on point and intimidating
- 'thopters were fantastic
- ecological station was visually stunning and mysterious enough to make me want to see more
- caladan looked awesome
- the sets were just about perfect
- nailed the look of Fremen, thumpers, stillsuit, stilltent, crysknife

In summary, the awesome visuals just did not make up for spending time on a flat lead character while limiting the usage of a mostly phenomenal cast.

While this movie could still win best pic as I type this, it is no shock at all the "experts" did not nominate anyone from this cast as they all were underutilized except for the main actor who is a dud.

Lots of flare but little substance to Dune. Dune 2 has some serious work cut out for it if it wants to be a movie that concludes a really fantastic story arc with lots of greats actors and one great actress.

Mad? Hardly. The few hours it took to slog though the movie is nothing compared to the enjoyment I have received re-reading Dune and all the Frank Herbert sequels over the years. Just some commentary on why I thought it was a huge swing and ultimately a miss.

Watched Dune again this weekend, not because of the Oscars, but just because. Probably my 5th or 6th viewing?

Several things get me a little choked up every time, mostly the "my son" speech by Leto. Not sure what it is about that (or about me), but it's so heartfelt by both actors. The premise is kinda cliche, but damn do they pull it off.

The amtal fight is one of the greatest fight scenes in movie history. For a film with such great music to go without a soundtrack there was a bold choice and it works. That absolute badass that plays Jamis sold the whole thing. It's all in his eyes, that knowing look that he can't win and the fight to try anyway. Paul beating him over and over again, hesitating every time. So good.

The one interview I want to read is with the guy at Chilton's that decided "yo. I know we publish automotive repair manuals but hear me out for a second. I think we should publish the book about a bunch of drug addicts getting high and riding around on top of giant worms." I want to know that story. I mean the guy got fired over it.

I finally saw it. Maybe the unfair expectations I had with all the glowing reviews, I liked it but not much more than that.
Visually stunning and epic in scale, but half of one book didn't need to be 2:40.

No movie is for everyone, but what in the world could you possibly cut out? It needed to be at least 20+ minutes longer, honestly.
