They sent the same email for the Xbox preorder. They sent those emails are to cover their butt in case someone's system doesn't arrive on time.

The hardware itself should be fine. There are always firmware updates and stuff.

Most bugs will be game related.

Honest question, from an old who still games from time to time (LOVE Ghost of Tsushima) and some with my 11 yr old son... do all of you who are buying them right off the bat expect them to work flawlessly upon purchase, or do you fully expect to deal with a lot of bugs and hiccups?

Like I said I'm an old and I stick to the theory of not buying the 1st gen of new technology (yes, I know this is PS5, but still). So I'm legit wondering if I still need to do that and wait awhile or if I should just hop on the bandwagon and get one sooner rather than later.

I have preordered and gotten day 1 consoles for PS2, PS3, and PS4. Never had a problem... ever. Daughters still play the PS3 on occasion and OG PS4 has never failed me.

Will there be any announcement on additional pre-order dates/times? I saw there were apparently some more yesterday morning but I missed it. Any way I can get some type of notification or just need to follow someone on Twitter closely to get the scoop?

I secured the in-store preorder for launch day. Kind of nostalgic doing it the old school way camping out in front of the store... all made possible by working remotely due to COVID. They only had disc versions....no digitals available. Looks like the digitals are going to be extremely hard to come by.

Haha, ouch! At least they're allowing external storage to be connected, but this feels like they cheaped out when they picked hard drives.

I'm sure the VP of Epic Games saying that had nothing to do with Sony investing $250 million into Epic Games.

Also, while the direct storage access technology is new and very cool, it's also baked into the Xbox series X (and S, man I hate the new Xbox naming scheme), meaning it's likely included as part of RDNA2 (AMD's upcoming GPU architecture) and it's included in the NVIDIA 30-series GPUs that just launched. So, cool yes, but not something exclusive to Sony.

Tech is great, but being able to actually fit more than one game on the drive is also rather important.

That is just one article. More than a few out there from other developers and tech sites say there currently isn't any SSD even on PC that is comparable.

It is a little sad that in 2020 we are getting just over 600GB of storage on the next gen. That would give you about 5-8 games, depending on the size. If you want to play another, you have to remove one, and wait an hour to put another on the system.

Oh well...

Right, because there wasn't any PC option for Direct Storage Access for the GPU when those stories were all written. The NVIDIA 30-series GPUs were the first available (if you can beat the bots to buy one) that have direct storage access. The new AMD RDNA2 (same GPU architecture as the PS5 and Series X/S) based GPUs will likely as well, but will have to wait to the end of the month for their official announcement to confirm.

The SSD isn't the crucial bit in the PS5 (it's just a PCIE gen 4 NVMe drive), it's the overall storage system that is really new and interesting thanks to the direct storage access capabilities of the GPU. That's why we'll be able to install third party NVMe SSDs (that Sony has validated) in the PS5. It why you can't play PS5 or Series X/S games from an external USB drive on either system. It's very cool tech that has some really interesting uses for game developers and I'm glad this next gen of consoles support it, so that it will be supported on PC as well.

My point is that an Epic exec was talking up the PS5 specifically because Sony invested a quarter billion into Epic Games.

edit - sorry for all the edits, it's the weekend and my brain clearly is on break after a crazy week.

Here's a bit from the RTX 30-series launch that discusses the direct storage tech.

https://www.nvidia.com/en-us/geforce/news/rtx-io-gpu-accelerated-storage-technology/

The implementation in the PS5 (and Xbox Series X/S) is likely part of the AMD RDNA2 architecture, but again, we won't know until AMD officially unveils the new GPUs at the end of the month. The PS5 was the first opportunity for most of those devs to have access to the technology.

Here's an MS blog about the DirectStorage API that will bring the same capability to PC (and is likely the same implementation in the Xbox Series X/S.

all this tech sheet is over my head. This is my takeaway. The SSD in PS5 is really fast, which probably translates to faster load times and other benefits like more textures blah blah blah, but you can only put two games on it (hyperbole for effect). The effective 660G storage (and I understand basically the difference between an ssd vs hard drive) vs the PS4 500G is concerning. When I got my day one OG PS4, first thing I did was put in a 2T drive. I'm not OCD, other than I cannot stand when storage fills up and pushes the limits (phone, cable dvr, ps4... I will pay whatever it takes to remove that anxiety).

Off the storage subject. One thing I am struggling with is I pre-ordered a PS5 on amazon, just like I did for PS2, PS3, and PS4. It's a tradition to me. Only problem I'm having is the lack of PS5 exclusive games. I can play them on my OG ps4. My backlog is HUGE on PS4, and paying 500 for a PS5 makes no logical sense since there are no games I want/need to play on PS5. It's all about tradition for me. I considered cancelling my preorder, but I know I will eventually get a PS5. I don't really care about waiting for a $100 price drop in 8-12 months, so I will probably keep my preorder and just have it be an expensive paper weight for a few months.

If I wasn't such a FromSoftware fanboy, I'd agree with you. But I'll probably put 200 hours on Demon's Souls. Only exclusive I need to justify the purchase.

I have a huge backlog on my ps4 as well. I'm just going to play them on the PS5 with improved settings.

I'd generally agree that the amount of storage space is subpar. But its 400-500 dollars. Storage is the easiest component to upgrade if you really want more. I don't need more than 4-5 games on at a time personally, so its not a big deal for me. I can understand that may be different for people.

Neither one of these things is going to comfortably fit in a typical TV stand. The elongated design from Sony is probably the better bet to fit, but it may still be a tight squeeze.

I guess it also just kind of goes to show how similar these are built to gaming computers. There's just no possible way to have even mid-range components inside of a smaller box at this point due to heat generation.
