McCarthy asking Stephen Jones for guidance on player reps in preseason (Hardknocks) tells me all I need to know about him as head coach of the Cowboys.

Hes just another sideline guy present to give the illusion of an actual coach in charge.

Next week's continuous drone shot on Hard Knocks will be a trip through Mike McCarthy's bowels. It might take the whole hour. It also will probably be more entertaining than tonight's episode.

So it looks like Keanu Neal went from a guy that looked very rough at the beginning of camp to the highest rated pre-season defender according to PFF (I don't particularly like them but hey, it's a noteworthy measurable).

Looks like he's doing exactly what Quinn thought he could do. So much so that all the inside guys have named Parsons & Neal your starting LBs. The cool thing is that LVE has looked good as well. We limit his snaps (health) and we have a back up guy that has, in the past, played at a pro bowl level.

In case anybody is wondering, Parsons was right there with Neal in terms of PFF grading and Cox did very well also. LBs look to be in great shape for the next few years.

So next year the cowboys pay off Jaylon, bring back Neal, and let LVE go in free agency?

To the best of my knowledge:

Jaylon: His dead cap space hit would have been 16 mil this year. Main reason why he is still on the team. We also still owed him some guaranteed money. But next year we will save around 5 million on the cap if he's gone and his guaranteed money has been paid in full. 99.9% sure he will not be here next year.

Neal: If he plays out the rest of the season the way he's been playing in recent weeks, we are going to want to re-sign him. He's only 26 and is no doubt in hunt of a lucrative deal! I'm not sure if he will be a restricted free agent giving us first dibs. I'm sure he will want to stay and keep playing for Quinn, but the $ will do most of the talking.

LVE: All indications are that Parsons & Neal are the "starters" with Cox our up and coming guy. If all 3 stay healthy and perform well this year, we'll be negotiating with Neal & LVE will be gone. I see him leaving for a team where he can start right away (probably on a 1 year prove it deal) while there is still time to score that long term/lucrative contract.

Jaylon's 2021 salary guaranteed in March. If they knew the LB assets they were going to end up with in the draft, they would have cut Jaylon prior to March.

You have to think it's medical with Jaylon. As if the surgery and rehab worked initially, but it's simply not holding up in the long run. He's not the same guy from 2-3 years ago

Watching him now, he reminds me of that annoying kid in high school that was never good enough athletically speaking, but darned if he wasn't going to try and give maximum effort. You know that guy... when you are in the process of making a legitimate tackle and here comes Mr. Try Hard to "help". He ends up blasting you with a helmet to the ribs. As you lay on the ground trying to figure out if anything is broken he's slapping you on the helmet yelling, "yeah bro, we got that guy!". Friggin jackass!!!!!

Yup. I remember it well. The folks on the radio kept talking about him and wondering if his nerve was going to "fire". Turns out for one year it did. He was good for one year. The rest of the time he has been dog crap. He got drafted by Jerrah and paid by jerrah, but we definitely need to make it a priority to move on from him next year. Pay him off please.

No need to pay him off, he's made all his guaranteed money already. After this year we simply cut him. He'll have dead cap money but we will still be saving cap space by not paying his base salary.

Noah Brown is going to be one of those guys that 7-8 years from now when he's with another team we'll say "he's still in the league?"

I can see him making a career out of being a solid but journeyman 4th or even 3rd WR in this league.

Just started Hard Knocks... how about that 3 minutes drone run to start the episode. That was pretty flawless execution by all, including the 100+ people doing yoga to the guys opening the doors at just the right time. Nice!

PS: Is it a bad sign for our future cap that Digg's kid is yelling "We want the money!". ROFL.

Maybe it's just me but I've thought Hard Knocks has been super underwhelming so far. It's usually one of my favorite shows (plus it's like the unofficial start to football season every year) but I think whoever runs Dallas' PR is cutting way too much good stuff out.

It's extremely boring. Needs to be a 30 minute show if the teams are going to be able to control the content

You're probably right. I came into this offseason saying that I wanted a young player to replace Wilson or Brown. Yet, here we are again, end of camp, and it's very likely our top 5 will remain the same.

Gotta give the guy credit. He had a long way to go as a WR when he entered the league. Did the dirty work and became a special teams workhorse. Not content to just be a ST guy though, he's worked very hard on his WR game and developed into a legitimate back-up that any NFL team could use. Kudos, he earned it.

A guy I meant to discuss after last weeks game... Jayron Kearse. That guy has been showig up when the cameras are on. Very aggressive safety and it looks like he's moving around a lot in Quinn's defense.

A completely unexpected bright spot for our safety depth. I honestly don't even remember when we signed him, but from what I've seen he's a lock to make the team.

I (we) know nothing about the Cowboys this year. I don't trust Quinn after his Falcons blew so many leads last year. I have no idea how the defense will be after they've played 3 preseason crap games. I have no idea how Dak or Zeke are going to play behind that O-line. I'm high on Parsons and Lamb. Not impressed by the other LBs.

Overall, I'm not optimistic nor pessimistic.

I'd like to think we can win the NFC East as I have no idea if the other teams will be improved or not, but the winner will probably be 10-7.

I don't really trust MacCarthy in critical coaching situations

Captain Obvious says we'll have some idea after the TB game.

I predict the Cowboys will be much better than most seem to think. People act like we didn't lose our QB and the entire Oline last season. Its also not the same defense. We're talking new scheme almost a complete turnover of the defensive roster.

Zeke and Dak look amazing in the little footage we've had a available on Hardknocks. If the line is just solid this could be a special year offensively.

My biggest concern is the dline. Theyve added guys but there's been injuries again.

They have the talent and ability to be good. My main concern is health. Will collins, Williams, smith, and martins injuries resurface on the o-line? Will dak and zeke be ready to justify their contracts? Does the defensive line have anyone ready to step up and at least play decent?

I get the concern about Quinns Atlanta defenses, but it really isn't the same thing having a head coach on the sideline vs a coordinator up in the booth.

I've watched the defense pretty closely this preseason and to me it's night and day what Quinn has brought to the table.

Rush's arm isnt great but I dont think it is that bad. Grape is one of the most indecisive qb's I've watched. When he's not playing 3rd teamers, he's a sack (and maybe strip-sack) waiting to happen
