I don't necessarily disagree, but if we're dubbing Lynn and Lee aces based on their time in Texas, then:
Lynn 3.36 ERA in 1.5 years starting for Texas
Lee 3.98 ERA in 0.5 year starting for Texas
Harrison in 2 years prior to injury: 3.34 ERA
Wilson in 2 years prior to free agency: 3.14 ERA

If we win out, we are guaranteed to have a top10 pick. If we can lose out, we are guaranteed the #2 pick, then we would be banking on Pittsburgh to go 3-2 or better in their last 5 games to sneak in and get the top pick. They have 2 against the Cubs and 3 against Cleveland.
If we lose tonight, we pretty much guarantee a top 5 pick.

Pirates just went up 2-0 early on against the Cubs. If they can hold on to that lead, we would only be 1 game ahead. They play Cleveland for their last 3. Cleveland has already clinched a WC spot, so maybe there is a chance Cleveland doesn't care too much about that series and mayyybe Pittsburgh can take a couple of those games. Like you said, still a long shot, but you never know.

Kinda figured something like that was always a possibility. Last year was a short draft---although certainly you can argue the order doesn't mean much after Round 5---and, also, baseball doesn't like small sample sizes.Jimmy McNulty said:

I get that but article also says its Manfreds decision how draft will be handled. Just pointing out the idea that worst may not get 1st.
Pittsburgh won again today. There's now a difference of 1 in the loss column between us and them.

Just looked at the tiebreaker for the MLB draft. And if two teams have an identical record, they look at the prior season's ending record, and the team who finished with the worse record gets the higher pick. In that scenario it would be the Pirates.
Therefore they technically still have a 2 game "lead" on us for the top pick. They have three games left and we have 4. So the only scenarios left for us to get the top pick are as follows:
If the Rangers finish 0-4, the Pirates need to finish 3-0 or 2-1
If the Rangers finish 1-3, the Pirates need to finish 3-0
Every other scenario we can't pass them for the top pick.
That means we have a 15% probability of getting the top pick still.
