Are you referring to the grocery business?

HEB takes whatever it wants. WM cannot and does not challenge HEB on produce or meat specifically, grocery in general.

Be interesting to see how Lidl, Aldis and Trader Joe's fare. In general, all 3 generally much better managed than the average WM

Better question is why Kroger rolled over and played dead. They haven't opened any new stores in well over a decade in the area, gave up on Southwest Parkway years ago, and then continue to stall on Kroger Marketplace plans. (But Greens Prairie!) Yeah I heard that too, but a few years ago even Kroger employees I talked to said there was a Marketplace coming, and they closed down the Southwest Parkway store with no replacement. Back in 2001, H-E-B Pantry and Kroger were on a 1:1 ratio in terms of stores, with the 2818/Wellborn H-E-B store, H-E-B will beat them 5:2 (already they're winning 2:1).

Kroger can't compete anywhere that HEB wants market share. HEB crushes them in price , selection and quality.

We're fortunate as heck to live where we do. There are few grocery retailers that are as good as/better than HEB. Maybe Wegmans and Publix are close

They run neck-to-neck with H-E-B in Houston, they operate in the Dallas-Fort Worth area where H-E-B is only in the suburbs, they never were in Austin and Waco (maybe a few stores in the 1960s), and they only aren't in San Antonio because H-E-B was stealing confidential information about the sales of their stores (which Butt admitted to).
