What is the use of the tactical helmets? Just the easiest way to utilize the ear protection along with night vision? Those were the portion of the picture that had me asking the same question about "whats his back story" not a lot of average joes running around the deer lease in a tactical helmet....although it sounds like a fun way to spook the neighbors

I need some help on ATF Forms and trusts.

I just purchased (have not received) a 300 blk pistol from eyeguy. I want to convert this pistol to SBR. In order to do that, I need to file a form 1?

A freind of a freind that should be in the know tells me its a form 4, but I dont think that is correct.

Secondly, since i havent picked up the firearm from the FFL yet, is it best to have my Trust already completed and "register" that pistol under the trust? Or does it matter?

TLDR: Are these the correct steps for converting AR pistol to SBR?
1. Create trust
2. "register" pistol under trust
3. Take SN off lower, file Form 1 to convert to SBR?
....
4. Purchase suppressor
5. File Form 4 for suppressor
6. Modify trust to show SBR with suppressor.
7. After stamp received, pick up suppressor from FFL.

If you're building the SBR, you file a Form 1. If eyeguy is building it, he transfers it to you on a Form 4.

I would go ahead and get the trust ready. No reason to wait. Many some with a schedule that is easily modified to add/remove trust property. When creating SBRs, I always move the "base" gun into the trust before sending off my paperwork. I've seen BATFE kick forms back when the trust doesn't "own" the gun before conversion.

Your TLDR is accurate minus step 6. The trust doesn't own the suppressor until the transfer is complete and the suppressor is in your hands. So just swap items 6 and 7. Pick up suppressor and then add to trust.

I have my trust property schedule laid out as Serial, Model, Caliber, Date added to trust. Makes it very easy to add new purchases

What is the need for a trust? I remember people talking a ton about gun trusts a few years ago but then it seemed to stop. Why is that needed/What is it needed for?

So you didn't have to get chief local law enforcement (CLEO) approval. Now, that is done as Obama rammed through ATF 41p.

So I just went and googled your entire list.....very fun of course. But for the most part if you had them all sitting out on the range I couldnt hardly pick one from the other or tell you the use of one vs the other (no comparing the sniper set ups to a carbine obviously)

As mentioned, in the past it was a way to get around needing CLEO approval on your application. in some areas the CLEO refused to sign and you were out of luck. Trusts also didn't have to submit pics/prints. With 41F becoming "law" last year, CLEO sign off went away but now all parties have to submit pics/prints.

The one big advantage of trusts now is if you have multiple people who might want to use your NFA items when you aren't around. Family trusts are popular so your dad/wife/brothers, etc can all take the NFA stuff and use it without you being present. If you register as an individual, only you can be in possession of your NFA items.

thanks. and what does a trust cost? I saw them being discussed on the thread for the build party last weekend but I never saw if they were going to be done or what it would have cost.

Depends on the attorney. Most are somewhere around $250. Chris Bass (214-596-8314 christopherbass01@gmail.com ) is one in DFW that I recommend, and we have several Aggies that also draft trusts.

Is there a benefit to going that route as opposed to using one of the online $99 sites?

Im sure there is just asking what..

Also do most of yall place all of your guns in the trust or just NFA items?

When I had my FFL, I saw trusts from all of the "big" NFA trust attorneys plus regular estate planning attorneys and the online ones. I didn't see much of a difference, but I'm not an attorney. The "big" NFA attorneys generally had 20-30 page long trusts. They're also available if you have any issues. The online ones aren't any less legal.

I use a free Quicken Willmaker trust from 8-9 years ago, and it still works fine.

I have all of my guns in my trust, but that's really individual preference. I use it to keep an easy list of all the firearms I own. Also, if I die, I know my guns are going where I want them to and my heirs don't have to worry about dividing things up. I wouldn't mix other non-firearm property in a gun trust.

I'm running a Sparc II with a Vortex VMX-3T 3x multiplier on my AR rifle.

Happy with both, but I have some problems sometimes with the magnified red dot due to my astigmatism.

PA and Holosun are both good options. I find the dot on their newer ones comparable to an Aimpoint.

My oldest PA dot is probably 9 years old and is still kicking. It gets terrible battery life, but the dot doesn't drift at all. They're hard to beat for the price. Some of their stuff is rebadged Holosun.

Broke down one of the Mk12s and swapped the 18" barrel for a 16". Threw an Aimpoint T2 on the Nightforce via a piggyback mount for use under night vision.

scope sure does seem far back, they have bad eye relief?

I have a longer LOP - and with the SOPMOD - eye relief is not a problem.
MTxTwelve

Plus, I think you have it backward - if the scope had horrible eye relief, you'd want the scope sitting more forward than back to get a good position in regard to the eye box e.g. Larue SPR mounts.

I doubt he fires it much with the stock collapsed as seen in the image.

He had it right. Short eye relief is typically considered bad eye relief

In short, yes. It's so much easier to mount ear pro, goggles, and all of the fixings to one of these types of helmets. Also, those are ballistic helmets, so the weight of the helmet helps balance everything on your head - whereas I have had annoying experiences with the lighter bike or bump helmets not wanting to stay-put.

Yeah, longer LOP would make sense, but you must be sitting way back there on the rilfe.
I guess you fire prone a lot, through the scope... when on the move you're shooting through your piggybacked optic.

I typically have my scopes stopping right above the end of the upper receiver/charging handle, using a cantilever mount (like a PEPR).
That's usually is my sweet spot with my LOP. So just surprising to see the scope hang so far back.

I disagree, obviously. Would you rather have a scope that has eye relief of 3.5" or 5.0" - in your case it may just boil down to personal preference (I am not sure)? The larger the eye relief value, the more you will have to compensate by either a) placing the optic in a further forward position (moving toward the muzzle) b) increasing the stock length i.e. Length of Pull or c) a combination of the aforementioned. That's why I mentioned the Larue-style mount - its intended design was to provide shooters the option of obtaining proper eye relief on optics with a "poor" or larger eye relief value, by not having to alter the LOP or "bridge the gap" between the receiver and rail.

I would argue that most optics these days - especially ones designed for the AR platform - are built with shorter eye reliefs to support nose-to-the-charging handle style shooting.

That's usually is my sweet spot with my LOP. So just surprising to see the scope hang so far back. That's where most of mine end up +/- ... The scope cap on this one kind of adds to the perceived depth of the eye piece, but it is a little further back than how most of my optics are mounted - but like I said, I can compensate for that in my LOP and still remain comfortable.

Hmm having trouble embedding...
