My choices would either this or this
That strike eagle is what i put on top my 300blk. For 300 bucks, its pretty damned good.
FYI that PA optic is made in the same factory as the vortex.

I prefer a stubby vertical as far out on the handguard as possible. Gives me the most control.

Plenty of experience with all of them. If you know what you're doing it won't matter at all. If you're new to ARs, I still don't think it will matter much. 90 percent for looks.

6 of one, half dozen of another.

If this is your first AR and you are going to be shooting mostly 55gn or 62gn (M855) then either one if fine. Twist has impact on the stability of a bullet in a ratio to the length of the bullet. There are various formulas for calculating it and many online twist rate calculators but here's a good chart for general explanation.

90% of the ammo on the shelf at your local outdoor store will be some variety of 55gn or 62gn and a few 65 grain varieties of 5.56mm/.223. The Military's first generation 5.56mm round was the M193 with a 55gn FMBJ and the most common current round is the M855 which is 62gn with a steel core pentrator,

Keep in mind that it's going to be very difficult to load anything above 77 gr to magazine length. I think even the 75 gr Hornady amax won't fit in a magazine when properly loaded.

So like Charlie Brown said, it doesn't matter. That chart is more useful (at the high end) for bolt-action or single shot rifles.

I think the chart is useful for showing what twist CAN do but a lot of people blindly follow it. I have a 1:7 that seems to love 55 FMJ and 60 Vmax and hasn't shot the heavier stuff near as well.

Basically, get anything 1:7-1:9 and buy 6 or 7 different types of round to see what works for your gun.

Not a hunter, this is purely for home defense/SHTF scenarios.

And because i grew up in a country with no 2nd amendment.

Thanks for all the info.

Budget around $1000

On my AR-15:
I would like a foregrip
Purely aesthetic- i like the Picattinny rails - how much will that will push up the cost?
I'm thinking 18'' barrel
don't think i need a scope to begin with.
What options do i have on the front sight?

EyeGuy, do i get a texags discount if I visit your store in Houston? :-)

If you are buying for home defense I would say get a 16" barrel.

If it's pure home defense, I would build/buy a pistol with a shorter barrel.

Bender,

I am currently building a 6.8 and now I want to complicate life and build an A2 type like the one you have pictured. Where did you get the upper with the fixed carry handle?

Thanks

An AR with a red dot and a white light is one of the best tools for home defense. 5.56 penetrates less than most common handgun cartridges.

Less penetration than handgun rounds or buckshot through walls, incredibly easy to mount lights/optics, adjustable stock means both my 6' 1" self and 5' 1" wife can comfortably use the same gun if needed, recoil is minimal, capacity is great....

Unless you live in a ban state or flat out can't afford an AR (though these days they're pretty damn cheap), there is no better option for home defense, period. Other options can work, but they are not ideal. A properly set up AR-15 is the best option for home defense, bar none.

So mine is technically an A4, because that's actually a detachable carry handle on top of a railed upper. A2s have the carry handle fixed to the receiver.

I had EyeGuy build this one for me. It's a very good shooter, and one of my favorite ARs. Now I just need to save up for an ACOG for it and my A4 clone will be complete.

I hear bear spray or wasp spray works

Let him try that out while I'll stick to my ole trusty ARs... Well before they fell in a lake.

I've probably built/own more ARs than anyone on here.

I just think a hand gun or shotgun would be easier to use inside a home

Already have a .300blk SBR.

What's the better choice, for about $1000?

a) buy a mid range AR in 5.56

b) buy a better complete upper and switch with my .300blk (use same lower)
