What'd I'd love to see happen is see Wentz go undrafted at 4, we trade back to 7 or 8 picking up a second and possibly third round pick and draft Wentz there. Get a decent LB and rb in the 2nd round and another possession WR to play opposite dez.

Again, that's my ideal dream scenario. So of course the cowboys are going to trade up to 2 to get Wentz

Some of that depends on the combine, but I'm not one of those who think that Wentz will slide past #7 and San Fran. If anyone slides, it might be Lynch. It's always possible, though.

If SF is trading up from #7, it'll be to grab Goff or Wentz. We might have an interesting standoff between the two.
We'd be able to get the most in return from a team trading up for a QB.

Correct. I've mentioned that multiple times in this thread. I was addressing the poster's idea of trading from #4 to #7 and still getting Wentz.

Ramsey is a full go for the combine...nothing serious it doesn't seem if he did get hurt.

On the QB's, it will be super interesting to see if someone trades up to 4 to take Goff or Wentz because Jags, Ravens, Dolphins, Bucs are set. 49ers are the wildcard for sure unless someone like STL trades way up and that's when you could get a real haul.

Doubt Wentz makes it to 7. Doubtful he would be there at 4.

Wouldn't be surprised it the 49ers or some other QB desperate team doesn't try to get the #1 and jump the Browns who are supposedly sold on Wentz at 2.

I would. Going from 7 to 1 would require at least three first round picks and possibly more than that. You basically handicap your team for the next 3-7 years doing something like that.

They like Wentz. "Sold" is a big term, but if he goes at #2 there is zero chance Dallas would pass of Goff at #4.

Stephen Jones: "Demarcus Lawrence back surgery was more complicated and extensive than we originally thought. "

So now...no Hardy..no Gregory for 4 games...Lawrence has back issues potentially....

Mincey I believe is an UFA.

So that leaves them with a grand total of no RELIABLE DEs going forward.

This team has no choice now but to sign a name at DE in Free Agency, and probably needs to compliment that with drafting one in the first 2 rounds. At the very least, another versatile DL (DT if not DE).

Imo...forget Quarterback now in the first 3-4 rounds of this draft. You need defenders in a bad bad way or else Romo or no Romo this defense is gona get shredded in 16.

Awesome! The last time we were so down on our team we were one bad call ( it was a catch!!!) away from the nfc championship game. Keep the pessimism coming boys!

I imagine that they'll sign some cogs, but nothing too extreme. BaD radio had a good piece today about the perils of overspending in free agency, which I generally agree with. I think a lot of it depends on the combine. If Goff and Wentz are just too good to pass up, I'd be surprised if Dallas didn't spend to shore up some lineman and spend two or more picks on the Dline. Dallas will have four of the Top 100 draft picks, so they're in prime position to really address multiple areas.

Nfl network reported that there are concerns with Goff having smaller than ideal hands. If true that would raise a caution flag on him.... Especially having to finish the season on the road in bad weather cities.

Still think trading down to grab Elliott is the right move for this team. Elliott said he's shooting for a sub 4.4 40 at the combine. Can't wait to see his drills.

The hands issue has been known for years. Not a new issue nor much of a concern. If he'd had fumbling issues in college or if he weren't so good in the pocket, this would raise more eye brows.

The way I see it commit to one strategy. Either you're rebuilding, or your filling holes.

They cannot fill all the holes they have with a couple of stop gap cogs 3rd tier Free Agents. It does no good to bring in guys to replace Barry Church or JJ Wilcox if those guys aren't tangibly better than Church or Wilcox. They need to balance the signings with the Romo "window".

Make a decision. Are you really trying to win a Super Bowl with Romo in the next year or two? Or are you trying to just find your future QB and get younger? This team is not contending for any Super Bowls if they don't upgrade in a big way Safety play, DE play, DT play, and then get some help probably at CB and on offense as well.

Anything short of making a real effort to upgrade those areas of the team are just half assing it imho.

As has been mentioned many times on this thread, if you are looking for one draft to push you over the top into a Super Bowl, you're looking at a world of disappointment.

No doubt they have many holes to fill, but I can't stop my mind going back to Romo. If you think there's a chance he plays 14+ games the next two years, go for defense in the draft and load up on a couple of FAs and go for it.

If you tell me that Romo is going to battle with injuries the next couple years like he did this year (which is my line of thinking), then you absolutely HAVE to go QB, IMO.

That's why I'm not looking for one draft only. I'm looking to supplement the draft with a good free agent signing class. I think they can be serious contenders in 2016 (I realize I might be in the minority on that) with some key additions combined with a high draft position which will allow them to bring in some day one contributors.

Obviously the backup QB position is another thing to consider.

There is absolutely a chance. The question is whether or not you are willing to risk the next 10-15 years of the franchise on that chance.

From a thread on Premium regarding Cowboys draft outlook:

"With the Cowboys at number four, they have a quarterback for this year, but what about beyond that? I think that is the question for them. I've talked with multiple people with the Cowboys and they've all told me, ad nauseam, 'Nope. We aren't taking a QB.' But, what if (Jared) Goff is there at number four? How much does Tony have left in the tank? If they look at it and think Tony has two or three years left, then they would be looking to find someone who could help them in the immediate future. At number four, there is a lot of possibilities on the defensive side and there were times (this year) that the defense probably needed another athlete. If Myles Jack is on the board and you have a good feeling he'll be okay, you fire off for one of the best athletes in college football and you may have something there. It will be interesting to watch."

Man, I'd say that drafting a hit-and-run linebacker with a blown out knee is a bigger risk than quarterback at this point, especially with the average lifespan of a linebacker these days. I'd rather go with an edge rusher or back four at that spot.

I should edit this to mention moving him to a safety position nullifies the previous point.

I disagree, kinda

If they think one of these guys is a legit top 5 prospect, then they have to draft him regardless of Romo

Reaching for a QB because they are worried about Romo would be a huge mistake IMO

BaD radio just had a great Romo segment:

- Bob finds it odd that Romo hasn't had his surgery yet. He cited previous examples of the injury in players and nearly all had surgery THE NEXT DAY. Romo has waited 90 days and still hasn't made up his mind.

- They think that this is no longer a Tony Romo window and compared it to Aikman's injury plagued twilight years. The question to them is whether or not Dallas realizes it.

- Bob believes that Stephen has to be bluffing with the "no quarterback" talk to try and keep other suitors from trying to trade up. He doesn't really see how Dallas can choose anything but a QB in the first round.

- Went over Romo's collarbone history, which should scare any Cowboys fan to death.

- At this point, the "Win with Tony" is a ticking time bomb that could easily set Dallas back a whole decade.

A very sobering segment.

i disagree. Build the nucleaus, draft qb later in a deep QB class. If Romo fails we'll be picking early again in no time, and you can have your top 5 qb.

I'm with you. I agree that we shouldn't reach. I do, however, think that Goff or Wentz will be there at 4. Now, if they are gone and you're talking the kid from Memphis, I agree that they should not reach for him.

Now, if you tell me Wentz and Goff are gone and you could trade back a few spots and get Lynch AND extra picks, I'm def listening.

There is a big risk though that Philly and the Rams would be within striking distance to come ahead of you to get Lynch.

Joel Klatt was just on BaD radio and had a bunch of interesting tidbits:

- He believes that Dallas is beyond stupid if they aren't looking quarterback in the first round. Believes that teams that "don't learn from their history are doomed to repeat it".

- He believes that Carson Wentz is the best quarterback in the draft. Klatt isn't concerned about the "small school" issue after seeing Joe Flacco, Phil Simms, Steve McNair, and Tony Romo have success. He believes that guys like that are more a result of late blooming or injuries in high school.

- Believes that better measure of a quarterback is the ability to read progressions against rolling zone and man defenses. He says that Wentz and Goff both shown on tape that they can read these defenses.

- Also says that both Goff and Wentz have shown the ability to make those "tween" passes that fall in between the 2nd and 3rd level of a defense, which is the hardest and most important throw to make in the NFL.

- Believes that Goff will be there at #4 for Dallas to take. Thinks that Goff fits perfectly in Dallas' offense with the throws he'll be required to make and his ability to manipulate the pocket without getting flushed.

- Isn't concerned about Goff's hand size (actually laughed at the idea). Says that the only reason hand size matters is ball protection; however, Goff has the best pocket presence, mechanics, and footwork of any college QB that he's ever studied (talks of how Goff always has two hands on the ball in the pocket).

- If Wentz has as good a combine as projected, there could be numerous teams trying to trade up to get him at #1. He believes that Dallas could be among those teams, but that Houston, San Fran, and St. Louis may also be looking to trade for the right price. Dallas would have to give up the least to get to that spot and has a better draft position in 2016 to make it happen.

- If both Wentz and Goff are gone at #4, then he believes Dallas should take Jalen Ramsey or Myles Jack. Does not believe Lynch possesses value to be taken at that spot.

You'd take a safety at 4? Ramsey can't be the pick at 4 unless they think he's a starting corner.
