New trend in college football is to not have a spring game. Nebraska, USC, Florida st, t.u. Have all cancelled them for this year. Extra games played, roster turnover, are a couple of the reasons given. How long till A&M follows suit?

Spring games suck and are incredibly boring. I can't believe there are still fans that clamor for them.

Cancel spring game

Go back to one signing day for HS

Make the portal a draft somehow.

Blow up conferences, make it an AFC/NFC with divisions just like the NFL.

F This

If i wanted the NFL I can watch it.

Give me one signing day after playoffs, like Jan 21. Like a two week Transfer portal window from Jan 22- Feb 14 unless head coach quits/fired

Put playoffs at 8 teams. No automatic conf champs get in. Best 8 go.

Let's go.

It's a free game that gives me, my son, and my dad an excuse to get to College Station and spend some quality time without worrying about parking, leaving the game early (especially with a 6 year old) or large crowds. You get generally good seating, and if it lines up right, you can go see some baseball.

I look forward to it every year.

You mean that a group of blowhard enter a room and vote on who they think should be allowed to continue to play?

That's not competitive sports, that's political B'S.

I have two boys and we love the Spring Game. They were able to get high fives from the players and acquire an autograph last season. It's an easy way to create invested interest.

It's all about protecting the roster. Nebraska's coach pretty much said other teams scouted their spring game and used it as a recruiting tool for the spring transfer period. So they decided to deny that opportunity to have their players seen by other teams. It's all about the spring portal and nothing else.

Not sure how my reverence for the greatest band of all time, AC/DC, is relevant in this situation.

better ways to use time than a half speed simulated game. actual practice is more productive.

nebraksa coach Rhule did raise one good point though. with all the poaching of players, why should be put his team on display for other teams to watch in the spring and see who they want to pick off?

Having the Portal as a Draft would be hilarious. Would be totally screwed up but absolutely funny watching players decide to take a leap of faith into the portal and or staying put and working through the adversity.

Yep

Just another unintended consequence of the free transfer

Worst rule in college sports is the free transfer

I won't be surprised if Texas A&M follows suit. Usually, spring game is on Parents' weekend, but that changed last year. Last year, Parents' weekend was 4/12-4/14, and the Spring Game was on 4/20. This year, the Parents' weekend is 4/4-4/6, the same weekend as Chilifest.

If holding the spring game puts us at a competitive disadvantage then we should also cancel.

You just assured the sips will make in every year. Always over rated. Georgia beat them twice and still finished behind in the final polls.

This, lots of reason's to love the tradition of the Spring Game. Goes beyond it being just about quality football.

I dunno. Spring games are boring as heck.

Start a new tradition. Come support the baseball or basketball team. Or go camping or something.

Already do all the above. Doesn't require a sacrifice

Why do we care anymore. They're not really students, they're paid and could be gone next year.

Games are uneventful...I get it for a new HC to see them and how they run stuff, but nothing else to gleam from it. Typically, many top players held out or undergoing 'recovery' for some kind of surgery.

It's great for all the lower level players to maybe show coaches something, but coaches already know.

What's bad is the uneducated fan seeing someone from 4th string make a play and think we have depth or a playmaker who coaches 'appear' to be overlooking. Make me smile every year....so some fun there.

It'd be real interesting if the portal worked more like a waiver wire system. Imagine being a disgruntled highly touted recruit and it doesn't turn out like you hope, so you jump in the portal and programs (starting with the teams with the lowest record) put in a waiver claim on you. Do you stay at Alabama or do you take your chances on being picked up by Akron?

That's not competitive sports, that's political B'S.
Not to mention it promotes a system that has far less parity and schedule strength than NFL divisions do. Conference strength in college football was proven suspect by all four conference champions who received byes losing in their only playoff game…

One may freely hate the NFL, but reason requires noticing what they do to try and improve parity and competitiveness.

A lot of coaches are dropping their spring games because they want, as much as possible, to help keep a lid on their talent level. Spring games are a good way to poach players from other teams. It will soon be the new norm.

Much the same thing happened in 2023 shortly after MLB instituted byes with 3 of the 4 division winners with the best records being vanquished (Dodgers, Braves, and Orioles).

https://www.mlb.com/amp/news/how-first-round-bye-affects-mlb-playoff-teams.html

It's hard not to draw sweeping generalizations about division strength in MLB being suspect based on a few games, yada, yada. And they each played an entire series just to be sure. Terrible divisions those.
