They have a slew of injury and drug issues on D and they go take a guy that can't play this year. Elliott is a win now pick.

Moronic. There is no defending this. It's classic Jerry - no consistent direction or strategy. Horrible.

His strategy seems to be taking the most talented player available.

"Win now" mode rarely works out in the NFL.

Pretty sure the most talented player available doesn't have 2 torn ligaments and nerve damage.

As if Jerry knows what works in the NfL. You serious?

I know exactly what it means. And it's a perfect example of where Jerry is all over the road and proves my point. Some years they seem dedicated to BPA. Other years it's out the window.

And you have to be able to play to be the BPA. "Play" being the root word in player. lattimore was the best running back available ...except for that darn nerve damage that never allowed him to play.

Finally, a pick I like for Cowboys. Can't say I know much about the player, but he plays the right position.

At least Sean Lee will have some company in the training room. Their LB corps will be a who's who of best players that can't play.

I haven't been watching all night. Why is Billings dropping and why wouldn't you take him over this guy?

Has he actually been accused, or are you just referring to Baylor in general?

Part of a scouting report on the DT from Nebraska:

The bad: Has very little scheme or position flexibility. Has very little scheme or position flexibility. Ends up on the ground all the time. Impact production doesn't match the athletic ability and talent. Square rusher missing hip swivel and upper body turn to improve penetration. Comes flying in as pass rusher on twists, but doesn't have workable counterattack ready.nds up on the ground all the time. Impact production doesn't match the athletic ability and talent. Sounds legit.

Don't know much about Collins other than most mocks had him in the 4th and 5th round.

Dallas of course took him high in the 3rd. Reaching for players...its what the Cowboys seem to do best year after year in the draft.

Yeah, it's a fine draft so far. Obviously I LOVE the first pick. I think my biggest problem with the 2nd pick isn't so much that he can't contribute right away, but we waste an entire contract year on him. Best thing about really good rookies is they are underpaid / cap friendly for 4 years (can be 5 for 1st rounders)... we only get cap friendly Jaylon Smith for 3 years before it's pay day.

Going back to our first pick, I feel much better about this draft with Zeke as opposed to with Ramsey. If we had Ramsey and Smith as our top 2 I'd have questions about both. So many people don't know what to do with Ramsey... CB, Safety, or some sort of rover position? Whether you agree with the Zeke pick or not, at least we know exactly who this guy is... a RB that never has to come off the field cause he can literally do it all.

Something I've been wondering about Ramsey... I'm not sure how high he actually was on the Cowboys board. To me it's clear now that from the press conference he was the smoke screen. They talked and gushed about him more than anybody. Zeke was downplayed and so was Bosa. Bosa goes #3 so obviously some teams really liked him!

Most of us thought all along it was gonna be a Ramsey or Zeke pick, but I'm starting to wonder if it was Bosa & Zeke all along? Also wondering if Bosa would have won the coin toss due to the team need.

Smith seems like a very high character kid... If he can turn into out Derrick Brooks on this defense & over come his injury I think everyone will gladly pay him a year early.

I have to believe that the Cowboys thought someone was going to take Smith in the top of the 2nd. Otherwise they could've picked up an extra pick by moving back a few spots.

Hoping they get the best DE available with their first 4th rounder and dak falls to them later in the round.

Thats part of the problem. An organization who continues to not upgrade properly by bringing guys in off the street because they keep just saying its ok Marinelli will coach em up. The fact is though while he might be coaching em up best he can maybe they just arent as talented as the the Jones think. Our DL play for 2 years has been underwhelming. They need to give him better talent to coach up not always guys who were working at a car wash the week before.

I'm can't tell if there simply is a blind hate for Jerry shaping these opinions or if most people just don't understand the "best player available" approach to the draft.

The day Stephen took over was the day this team started using this approach and they have not wavered. It started with drafting Dez and it absolutely is a longer term view. A few points:

1. Best player available is based on THEIR evaluations, not ours or any pundits. That was apparent when they took Frederick many slots ahead of where the draft nerds had him going. The reality is he was the top guy on their board at the time, they tried to trade back but there wasn't the right deal so they just took him. I remember the years where we reached for a pass rusher because we just needed one. It never worked and it set the team back for a decade.

2. Picking the best RB they have evaluated in 10 years is not a short term view. He should be a cornerstone for 5 years at a minimum. Sure, many are questioning that evaluation but the reality is the Cowboys had Elliott rated higher than Gurley.

3. Picking the LBer who can't help this year does not mean they are switching priorities. They are just taking the best guy. I heard a pundit basically say the Cowboys are now doomed to have the worst defense in the league because they didn't take Ramsey. The reality is... drafting one guy to save your unit in his rookie year is asinine. Its the opposite of best player available. The Boys also feel very good about Smith long term. The team doctor did the surgery and he seems to have zero questions on or off the field.

4. Listening to the Jones' and Garrett, they clearly think they made some nice moves in free agency that address all these short term concerns you all have. They like to build a complete roster prior the draft so they can just take the best guys. They feel they did that. We can question it all we want but the strategy is consistent.

I don't have any heartburn on the 1st round pick. You could make a reasonable case for either player considered.

The second round pick is yet another example of Jerry playing riverboat gambler with his personnel decisions because he thinks the player's potential upside is worth it. We could get away with that if it only happened very infrequently, but it is a consistent pattern. Jerry consistently views players with injury issues and suspension issues as bargains that will all magically hit their peak potential once they join the Cowboys and be cornerstone contributors.

We have a 20 year run of franchise futility because Jerry is an incompetent player personnel manager. He gets no benefit of the doubt.

This is pretty funny because I just heard the EXACT same description used for Bill Belichick. He targets guys who have slipped in the draft due to injury or off field questions. Sure, its gambling to some extent but its not like they don't do their homework on these guys.
