Maleik Collins out 10-12 weeks with a broken foot.

He will miss all of training camp.

Well crap! Rookies absolutely need training camp. That really sucks! I am high on this guy but not sure we can expect much if he misses camp.

the chances of him being even a solid contributor this year are probably less than 50% now if you wana be objective and realistic

And what's up with the broken foot syndrome!?! Not that it's uncommon, but that's 3 years in a row now if I'm not mistaken. Lawrence broke his in OTA's his rookie year (2014), Dez last year, and now Collins in his rookie year OTA.

Cowboys need to switch to New Balance!

yet again highlighting how dumb it was to use the 2nd rounder on a nerve damaged knee. a rookie that misses all of the offseason/camp is going to be darn near useless this year.

I agree. I get more upset with that pick the more I think about it. As good as the Cowboys have been drafting in the 1st round, they seem to keep thinking our 2nd round pick is only good for TE experiments or injured bargain bin players.

While I would have considered it a bad pick at the top of the 2nd no matter what, I could maybe begin to buy it just a little if they'd ended up going defense in the 1st round. But once they went with Elliott, I thought it just placed a bigger premium on finding a 2016 defensive contributor with the 2nd. Always wildcatting.

Isn't counting on a rookie second rounder to be an impact player a risky proposition anyway? Why not shoot for the long term home run?

How did he break his foot? They're practicing in shorts and a helmet...

If you can't consistently find a contributor at the very top of the 2nd round, you are doing it wrong. If you are hitching your wagon to a 36 year old Romo while using top 40 picks on guys that can't play now and may never play, you are doing it wrong. But Jerry has clearly been doing it wrong for 20 years, so what's new.

Risks are fine in the right context. But this team already had a ****load of risks and question marks in the front 7. Drug issues, injuries, and goofballs abounded even before that pick.

How has this terrible defense from last year gotten better? Just curious.

Doesn't matter. Got Zeke. All is well!

Reggie Ragland, Ashawn Robinson, Jarran Reed all would start on this team. Even though I like Ragland I would have been against the pick (less than I was Jaylon Smith) until reports about bonehead being out of shape and skipping OTAs surfaced.

Boy, how mad would y'all be if we drafted Ramsey in the 1st?

for me personally, leading up to the draft i said i was fine with either Ramsey or Elliott but slightly preferred Ramsey, but wouldn't be upset with Elliot IF they addressed D with that 2nd round pick because it was so high and they could most certainly get a 2016 impact guy.

however, we don't have the intel teams do and they had intel Ramsey's knee might be problematic. if i had that intel, that woulda tipped the decision to Elliott but again, taking a day one contributing defender in the 2nd shoulda been a foregone conclusion. if this team is serious about contending in 2016 then Smith was a luxury pick.

if Ramsey's knee is not problematic then taking him, and him getting injured woulda been non complaint worthy because they did what they were supposed to do and addressed D. You can't fault a team for a guy getting hurt unless he's just got this really long history of it or has serious questions coming out.

So what do you do when all the defenders you had top of your remaining board go before you pick in the second? You swing for the fence again and take BPA. That's Smith. I don't know why this is so complicated for some. Apparently they had neither Ragland, Robinson, nor Reed atop their list in the second.
DannyDuberstein

What is difficult is when BPA has nerve damage. So to flip your cmment, I don't see how hard that is for some to understand either. Smith was only BPA in fairyland.

They were talking today about how good Gregory looks. Just like last year before the injury derailed his rookie year. Saying it's just so obvious how talented the guy is as a pass rusher compared to everybody else. Friggin knucklehead!!!

Don't get me wrong, I see what you're saying. But pre-draft prep / war room prioritizes and plans this **** out pretty intricately. These people are paid millions. That being said, you could always put in an application.

Many many many many GM's and others in the process have said over and over that drafting for specific needs in the early rounds is a sure-fire way to mess up. But I don't know either. Just know what I read.

With all due respect to those who rubber stamp anything Jerry does, the only reason they took Smith in the second is because the GM is also the owner.

Period.

Any other GM, who is actually held accountable to make the team better or they're getting fired, would have passed.

Oh...except Bill Belichick.

And Jerry is basically just like Belichick, right?

Right.

Good lord.

we are not privy to their evals or intel. they have been bullshi**ing us for years with things. they carry no benefit of the doubt. thats just the way it is. just like when they said several teams called and congratulated them on getting the "steal of the draft" Shante Carver. or when they said several teams attempted to trade up to get Greg Ellis and even offered a future 1st rounder. just like the time they said there have been many other instances.

i find it very very hard to believe they had no other defensive players rated at that level or near it.

i will say this...i'm not a professional talent evaluator but i'll go on record to say that Mackensie Alexander is going to have a very very good NFL career. a career that will at the very least have people saying he was good value in the 2nd round a few years from now. maybe the cowboys don't agree but i guess we'll see.
Reginald Cousins

I wanted Alexander as well. Only time will tell how that plays out.

Would you be upset if they traded their 2nd for a top 5 1st next year?

I think the pass rushers they liked were gone so they swung for the fences with Smith.

I never thought Smith was a top 5 talent even before the injury but a lot of people did.

But it's not like Jerry just pulled a name out of a hat. They think he's a franchise player when healthy and made the pick for the future. Playing the win now game during the draft is what GM's & coaches on the hot seat do that end up setting a team back. I glad Stephen is there to provide balance between Jerry, Jason, & Will.

True. Jerrys approach has proven to get results on the field pretty consistently.

It's like they think they're explaing the BPA concept to some Japanese tourists.

Trust us, we get the concept. The issue is one of (1) nerve damage and (2) jerry's consistently inconsistent strategic vision for assembling his team.

A Japanese tourist that landed here in 1995 would have had more success than Jerry. But if you want to throw in with him, have at it.

They should have used that #2 pick on Norm Hitzges. He seems to have the attributes they're looking for

You don't see improvement from when Jerry was running things unchecked and the way Stephen, Will, and Jason are doing things with Jerry now?

Are you against these moves because of picks Jerry made a decade ago?

Drafting Sean Lee and Bruce Carter worked out. That's pretty consistent results on the field for drafting injured linebackers in the 2nd round.

proof is in the pudding.

just because the turd has a lil extra shine doesn't mean its not still a turd. of course there appears to be a different way of doing things but again, there isn't anything to show for it by way of championships or even championship game appearances. that's really all that counts.

i will say that there does appear to be some hope though. a possible glimmer at the end of the tunnel. i still think they are going to highly regret not picking up another reliable LB as it might mean the difference between winning a division and winning a conference. same can possibly be said for DE but that's just 4 games hopefully.

Improvement from what? The Campo years?

Absolutely.

And you can thank Tony Romo for that. Without him you now know what Jerry has built.

See 2015.

Otherwise yes, Jerry has consistently made the right picks like Lee and Carter to be a mediocre 8-8 team that needs injuries to go their way to make it to the playoffs.

Looking good!

The without Romo argument is pointless because any team without a franchise QB is toast.

What I agree with is the LB argument. So many experts had DE as our biggest need going into the draft. I still feel or DEs are fine (not dominating but good) but our LBers are very close to being a disaster. If everything goes perfectly our LBers are actually pretty good... But there is a very good chance that group is a mess this year, starting with our MLB who will most likely be Mr Inconsistent.

Pats without Brady.

Broncos last year.

Hell AJ McCarron looked decent because CIN has such a good team.

Only pointless if you don't like factual proof Jerry is bad at his job.
