It disgusts me how the conservative media is jumping on the 20. Freaking morons.

We have a group who is FINALLY trying to elect a conservative speaker and these morons jump on their case. Do you want McConnells for the rest of our lives? Because that is how you get McConnels for the rest of our lives.

Idiots.

Last straw for me -- I'm done with Trump. Give me DeSantis in 2024.

What has Desantis said about any of this ?
Supporting McCarthy- the 20?

DeSantis was one of the founders of the freedom Caucus. That stands for a lot more than (D) Trump's recent comments about abortion and now his siding with the Uniparty to make McCarthy speaker.

In 2024, I won't vote for Trump. I'd rather Dems win if he's on the ballot.

He does seem to stay quiet on things that benefit the establishment with McConnell and McCarthy. A lot of the excitement for him is based on what they think he will do if in DC. But up to this point it seems like he's going to with establishment.

I sent August Pfluger an email telling him it was time to stand with the 20, and he continues to support McCarthy. I think a few calls today to his office are likely.

And it's why nothing changes
Republicans are best at complaining about what they will do if they ever can get power.

Same in Texas with Joe Straus all those years - if we could just get rid of him. Then Phelan is in and 40% of committees are allowed to be headed by democrats. Phelan is Joe 2.0!
Republicans that get elected and if have control they love moderate leadership so they can complain their hands are tied!

For those asking "what is the goal"?

It's so that the Freedom Caucus has say on who is speaker from now on. So far, every speaker has considered the FC to be an annoyance that they can ignore. This is the first time that a speaker snubbing the FC has had real consequences. If the FC can get McCarthy to step down, it sets a precedent. Speakers will need to get signed off by the FC for now on. If conservative morons are able to pressure the FC to relent, then the Freedom Caucus will become a joke and we will have McConnel-esq leadership for the rest of the foreseeable future.

This is a hill worth dying on. And it is easily the most important hill in sight.

Beyond that, it's notice to the party that the status quo is no longer acceptable. Hopefully this is the spark that leads to meaningful change in the party. They need to represent their constituents rather than their own self interests.

You do realize there are other groups that can torpedo whomever the Freedom Caucus want like members of the Republican Study Committee, Republican Governance Group, or the Problem Solvers Caucus?

I'm not sure who the 'good guys' are, by any means, in congress but I am skeptical that all of this is somehow destructive.

(That's a long-ish thread, but interesting).

I am very glad there is stress and angst on all sides, about the GOP house picking a speaker.

How about this for a way around it?

1) The non-Freedom Caucus Republicans vote "PRESENT" in the next vote.
2) The Democrat speaker's candidate wins.
3) The Republicans than vote to replace the Democrat Speaker with McCarthy
4) The dissenting 20 then have a choice of supporting McCarthy or having a Democrat speaker.

This would be highly unlikely to happen, but it would make for an interesting power play.

Rep. Mike Gallagher of Wisconsin and other House Republicans who work on military and intelligence matters said the protracted speaker's race is starting to impact national security planning since some security clearances are contingent on lawmakers being sworn in.

During a news conference Wednesday, Gallagher and other members of the House Republican caucus who are military veterans and firmly in McCarthy's camp in his bid for speaker said they would usually use the sensitive compartmented information facility, or SCIF, to receive daily briefs about threats around the world but no longer have access. Gallagher also said the drawn-out election for speaker has prevented him from meeting with the chairman of the Joint Chiefs in the facility.

"I'm informed by House Security that, technically, I don't have a clearance," Gallagher said. "I'm a member of the Intel Committee, I'm on the Armed Services Committee, and I can't meet in the SCIF to conduct essential business."

Rep.-elect Derrick Van Orden said: "We're trying to make sure that we can do the people's will, and a minority of our party has decided that they want to continue with this obstructionism. And it's actually becoming detrimental to our nation."

You know, the more i think about this the more I believe this is the way this should be done. It should be negotiated out in the open.

The behind doors way is not in the American public's best interest. We should see the action and see the fight take place sonwe know exactly where our representatives stand.

Contrary to media talking points, this is not embarrassing. It should not harm the Republican party or the nation as a whole. This is how it should be done

There's no way to 'force' a vote on a speaker once elected (via a majority of those present, in this case needing 218 right now), in a given congress. There is no 'vote of no confidence' parliamentary equivalent in the rules.

This isn't like a 'made up' office in the Senate, it's a constitutionally authorized position, 2 heartbeats from the presidency, so the 'people's house' can't just on it's own decide to kick one out after the position is filled, basically.

And because of that, the Freedom Caucus should chose to neuter themselves? Is that what you are saying? Should we also let terrorists be since they might get angry and attack us back?

The central principle of the republican party, and the one that GOP politicians claim at home in speeches, IS FREEDOM AND CONSERVATISM. Unlike the others, the Freedom Caucus is fighting for that central principle. It absolutely should have a primary say in matters such as this.

GOP is missing a golden opportunity to exhibit how parties should function - compromise to a candidate that the far left and right of the party find agreeable.

The Dems reach consensus by fear and intimidation - GOP could show how to get things done.

I'm with you, but there is zero chance that someone other than McCarthy becomes speaker.

Also, there is a significantly less than zero chance that one of the 20 holdouts becomes speaker.

I think the country will be just fine without them getting their briefings for a few days. Biden is CiC with a full staff and the Senate is in place. The House is really only useful for funding and that's already been passed (Remember? Had to rush through that $1.7 Trillion spending!) So at most he is just going to have a few days of playing catchup, he doesn't make any decisions as he isn't in the Chain of Command.

I do think this thing needs to be resolved and soon but I am getting really, really tired of those on both sides who are just flinging crap that's over the top (Crenshaw and crap like this on one and Gaetz and Boehbert on the other). It's fine to have demands and disagreement but you can also see who the real leaders are by who throws around crap like this to the press or public that just pushes the GOP further apart and has no constructive benefit.

I don't think that would work. The Pelosi rules are still in place. That means that if Jeffries is elected Speaker, a member of the Democrat leadership would have to initiate the Motion to Vacate. That wouldn't happen. If Jeffries is somehow elected Speaker, we're stuck with him.

I'm more concerned about a scenario where Democrats convince 8 of the most liberal Republicans - likely with promises of coveted committee assignments - to support a "unity" candidate - ie. Liz Cheney. The Dems could make that deal in private, and prior to the next vote, nominate Liz as well as Jeffries. Then all Dems & 8 Republicans vote for Liz. Game Over. Liz would be beholden to the Dems for being resurrected into power and it would be a disaster for the Republicans.

Just heard that the rules used to be one person could challenge the speakership and call for a vote for a new one. This was used to bully Boehner and Ryan so Nancy said no ****ing way and changed it to what it is now.

Ds are doing no favors with their communication strategy on this. That is perhaps the biggest failure over the last few days. Letting the Dems continue to control the narrative.
