He cannot cut a deal with dems on this. If he cuts a deal with the democrats there would be mass defection from his current #s.lb3 said:If he cuts a deal with the Democrats, there better be mass defections to offset this or the GOP will destroy their base.BMX Bandit said:

What would Mccarthy have to offer the Dems to bail him out of this humiliation? Even if he's elected with their votes, the "Taliban 20" would still be able to block any Republican legislation they choose.

Centrist GOP Rep. Don Bacon: McCarthy's Team Is In "Preliminary Talks" With Democrats
GOP Rep. Don Bacon told CNN on Wednesday morning that Kevin McCarthy is currently reaching across the aisle to come to a deal with Democrats to either support a "consensus candidate" for House Speaker or to vacate the House chamber to lower the threshold needed to secure a majority.
"There are preliminary talks but we don't want to go too fast on this because that then hijacks what Kevin is trying to do and we want to support Kevin," Bacon said. "We cannot let a small handful of folks that are on the extreme part of our conference, one of the smallest caucuses that we have, we can't let them control the entire House of Representatives."
Ok, but my question is what would the Dems ask in return for doing that?Ags77 said:74OA said:

DEAL
Apparently he would ask a certain number of Dems to NOT VOTE during the roll call and then vote present after the vote is taken ? Lowering the votes he needs to get a majority ?

I applaud standing up against the establishment but why wait until now when the vote and actions are very public. Why not take this "no way in hell" stance weeks ago when it really mattered? Exactly why this ******* shouldn't be Speaker. He is one of them. The Speakers are moderates, at best, over and over and over. They continually block conservative legislation. In Texas, too.ElKabong said:

I don't think the 19 would matter at that point. The democrats would outnumber that. The question would be is if the McCarthy defectors outnumber the democrats.Irish 2.0 said:Ags77 said:lb3 said:If he cuts a deal with the Democrats, there better be mass defections to offset this or the GOP will destroy their base.BMX Bandit said:

His political career will end if he does. Anything he puts forth in the house will not move. There are 19 votes saying he will go nowhere in any initiatives

"Ironically, McCarthy may have only himself to blame. By quickly embracing Trump after initially criticizing him over the January 6, 2021, insurrection, he linked his party's midterm election campaign irrevocably to Trump's reputation. But many voters were alienated by the ex-president's election denialism and landed McCarthy with a much smaller and more unworkable House majority than he expected."
"Some GOP members are now referring to the rebels as "the chaos caucus" or "The Taliban 20".

That's a mischaracterization of the quote and what was asked. He never said McCarthy was in talks with the Dems. Bacon has been the one throwing out a consensus candidate if McCarthy isn't Speaker for over a month.ElKabong said:

69.
Interesting strategy. If McCarthy's negotiations get some Dems to vote present then the Freedom Caucus will likely buzz in votes for the Dem candidate forcing McCarthy to hold the vote open to undo all the carnage.geoag58 said:lb3 said:If he cuts a deal with the Democrats, there better be mass defections to offset this or the GOP will destroy their base.BMX Bandit said:

Hint, If any Republican votes for the dim or enough vote present to hand it to the dim they never were republicans. Which is why McCarthy needs to step aside, he is not going to win, period!
I don't think they would do that. They would evaluate it on a bill by bill basis and support those that increase liberty and oppose those that do not. They wouldn't oppose everything just because, as that would be a bad look for them.Irish 2.0 said:aTmAg said:I don't think the 19 would matter at that point. The democrats would outnumber that. But they could stymy any bill he tries to push that would be on partisan lines if even for optics on his part. His bills would never even move off the house floor

Rice grad.
so fire him. IMO, the deal he negotiated with this group of 20 puts him in a weaker position once elected than he is now. It only takes 5 GOP members to call for a vote of confidence vote on the speaker of the house that would eventually vote him out. This group of 20 have McCarthy by the balls once he is elected. If he "works" with dems, refuses to investigate Biden, etc...he WILL not be speaker for more than a month or two.aTmAg said:And this is the "leader" a bunch of you guys wanted?ElKabong said:

JUST IN: Kevin McCarthy has begun talks with Democrats about a deal to support a “consensus candidate” for Speaker. - "THE HILL."

And that, ladies and gentlemen, is why 20 Republicans are standing in opposition to Mr. McCarthy and Paul Ryan's Fox News Channel.
He knew. But the calendar dictates that they appoint a Speaker now. He ran out of time to secure his election and is now threatening to blow up the party if he doesn't get his way.geoag58 said:Aggie95 said:I applaud standing up against the establishment but why wait until now when the vote and actions are very public. So you think McCarthy did not know he didn't have the votes before this began?
