Going to be hilarious if the moderate republicans figure out someone the dems are ok with and the 19 clowns voting against McCarthy get someone way worse.

Shocking no one. Kind of the Rs MO these days.

Yes, letting perfect be the enemy of good is definitely the hard right's MO.

I don't believe they need Senate approval to unfund the 87,000 IRS employees. I think the purse sits with the House and this isn't changing a law or introducing a new law. It is simply not providing the money so they can't hire these assassins.

That is my 'simple-minded' understanding. I have zero experience in DC, but I did read up on why this was doable before the Xmas break. Now I have slept since then, so I could still be wrong, but that was my understanding before my two-week hybernation.

I kind of like the idea of Mark Meadows as speaker.

A good point if true, but is McCarthy committed to rolling back Biden policies?

Show votes the Senate will never pass. Just like Paul Ryan's budgets up until the day the GOP took back the majority.

They can shut the government down unless they strike it from the budget bill

Exactly. This has nothing to do with what legislation the House might try to pass. This has everything to do with who gets to select the members of the conference committees to reconcile differences between the house and senate versions of must pass legislation.

You must have missed the omnibus bill that funded those positions. I suppose they could de-fund them in FY24 only to vote them back in during reconciliation. That will show Biden who's boss.

I just checked a news aggregator site. And not a single story on their main page, at least not the mobile version. This is all inside baseball that nobody outside of us political hacks follow.

Political sausage making is not for the squeamish and was never meant to be broadcast publicly. Things like the Louisiana kickback or Manchin holding the Biden agenda hostage until Nancy's bid finally topped his reserve price are no different than the Freedom caucus extracting as many concessions as they can with the little leverage they have.

What exactly could a more conservative speaker do given the Dem Senate and Dem White House?

You could have Ron DeSantis as speaker and the bills would still get shot down by the senate anyways.

That's my issue with this: what is the strategy here?

This is where the GOP needs to be right now...in the "or" stage. It is clear McCarthy isn't the going to get it. So they need to be polling their caucus with an ~5 choice ballot with names that are not McCarthy. Pick the guy (or gal) who gets the most points on that ballot using #1=5 pts and #5=1 point scoring and you will likely get 100% approval of that choice. Everybody is saying "I would be ok with Jordan" or "I would be ok with Scalise". So why not trot one of them out there for an internal caucus vote and see if anybody says no?

One concession might be to allow the Freedom Caucus to name members the various Biden investigation committees with authority to veto any Democrat selections to those committees.

I predict a McCarthy victory tomorrow (or God knows when), but that's reliant IMO on Jordan whipping those votes. I think the only realistic alternative is a Jim Jordan speakership if he decides to accept the support.

I have a hard time imagining these two factions coming together behind someone like Steve or Elise.

This thing has been a clown show but pretty entertaining.

I do feel bad for the families that were there to see the new congress-critters sworn in after the speaker vote. Guessing there will be a lot of rebooked flights and travel messes tomorrow after this junk. In theory this could go on for a while....

But governing ain't easy so that's just a part of that life.
