Keep in mind that Speaker is third in the secession order for POTUS. Extremely unlikely to ever matter but that is a reason it's not a purely ceremonial vote. That, and an effective speaker can force ir manipulate actions in the house.

I've been hearing from those speaking (those being asked) that McCarthy should be voted in and the rest saying, he will not be voted in. Nobody is saying McCarthy will be voted in.

how did she "support" him when he was in office? voted to ban drilling in the gulf, voted to overturn emergency declaration on wall funding, tried to block him on getting out of paris climate change deal, fought him on attempts to get rid of obamacare, voted against all his plans on taxes.

That's an interesting tally. From what has been reported, Mccarthy was said to have all but 5 votes but was likely to get enough of them anyway.

I don't care if it's temporarily painful or embarrassing for the Republicans to deal with some of the conservative right's concerns. I'm glad they're sticking to their guns, even if it's just to get concessions out of him.
