So where are we now?
McCarthy up to 213 votes - 3 short of winning on the last count. Just renominated again.
4 short I think because one came back.
Actually now that McCarthy has more votes than Jeffries he can just shift it to a plurality vote in theory. The holdouts have lots a LOT of leverage now and need to be very careful. McCarthy can't screw 20 Members but he can absolutely screw 4 or 5.

It's going to happen now so they need to find a way to save face and get on board.

I thought the clerk had said a total of 431 votes cast, but could have mis-heard.
I heard one was coming back for this next round.

Need a majority to agree to plurality, right?

I have to give the Democrats credit -- their intimidation tactics on their Reps are more effective than McCarthy's.

So the hold outs now are just scorched earth bomb tossers?

Got it.
That is nothing compared to the damage voting for all these spending bills has done, with essentially zero concessions at all from dims.

No official 3rd candidate this time, but holdouts can still go another way.

$31 trillion and counting. And reps haven't done a single damn thing to stop it every time they've had power. It's a uniparty when it comes to the issues that actually matter and has been for a while. How some people are still able to keep their head in the sand regarding this is legitimately mind-blowing to me.

Wild thought just popped into my head that I'm sure has significant flaws due to my lacking knowledge of how the House operates.

D have Presidency,
D have Senate with VP tie breaker
R has the House.

Under these conditions not much will get passed legislatively from either side.

Even if we had a D SOTH, that does not mean that D controls the House. It's not like if the D SOTH refuses to bring R majority legislation to a vote will matter because it will not get passed in the Senate.

What's the harm in this scenario of holding ground against McCarthy and forcing him to deal with D's thus exposing his lack of conservative ideals?

Accepting concessions now just keeps the status quo where establishment gives an inch but takes a mile, though this would be one of the rare times where establishment gave an inch.

Force the RINO's to admit they would rather side with the D's than support a conservative candidate and agenda and hopefully the sheeple will finally get to see the wolf in sheeps clothing that they foolishly have been voting for these past decades and thus correct their voting habits.
You do have significant flaws in the how the House works.

Your plan means that Dems appoint the Chairs of every committee and thus control the bills and agenda of those committees, that's what the Speaker does. So no Oversight or very little (Hunter Laptop, Church Committee, on and on) happens. Essentially the little power the GOP was going to get they just give up.

Your plan also is FAR more likely to have the opposite effect. It will show the GOP can't work together and can't govern. Now I understand as a conservative how that sounds great but the reality is conservatives are not the majority in this country, at all. Even among conservatives many still want government to operate and to get some wins. In order for your plan to work you would need a massive wave of conservatives to sweep the GOP Primaries and then to win the General in '24. Oh, and they have to do it somehow without much money because the money comes from folks that actually want to get legislation done. If you have a few billion of your own sitting around to fund it then great but otherwise you are talking about suicide.

This is not the time to go for the golden ring. This is the time to send a message and get significant concessions and fight for more in '24 hopefully with DeSantis or Trump as President and a GOP Senate. Hell this session of Congress is only going to be relevant for a few months before the '24 race takes over and even sooner if Biden doesn't run and you have both Parties fighting over the nomination.

Chip Roy did this the right way. He was reasonable and clear and got concessions. He made good points and won over folks. In the end though he also knows that there is no hard core conservative with enough pull to win the Speaker's race this cycle because there are enough RINO's to block it just as the conservatives are doing now. In the end these folks have to work together and burning every bridge with no plan that has a chance of succeeding is idiocy, that is unless you don't care about actually enacting real change and would rather just talk about it.

Yep. My Congressman.

Yes but it is in the Democrats' interest to go along with that, especially because it becomes the rule for the remainder of the Session.

I can't understand Boebert's thought process.

her election took 2 weeks to confirm as she won by barely 500 votes in a GOP +3 district. she underperformed literally every single Republican in Colorado.

so her grand strategy now is to act EVEN MORE CRAZY AND RIGHT WING.

how does that help her next election campaign?!

I cannot speak to her thought process, but I absolutely despise politicians making decisions based on what will help them get elected next time. If she's doing more of the same then that is commendable being consistent.

Making the right decision and then getting rewarded with re-election is significantly better than making inferior decisions solely because it yields more funding/resources for re-election.
