I applaud standing up against the establishment but why wait until now when the vote and actions are very public. Why not take this "no way in hell" stance weeks ago when it really mattered? Is it all for show?

Gaetz has been stating his opposition to McCarthy for weeks. This is no surprise. It's telling that McCarthy is more willing to make concessions to the left than conservatives in his own party.

If it is true that McCarthy is dealing with the democrats... would you McCarthy backers admit that the FC was correct all along?

If McCarthy some how gets in, he seems idiotic and petty enough to go after the group of 20. What can he do to them?

I'm not asking because I want to see it, it just seems this clown show will continue on in another way.

So he's more willing to make concessions to your fellow radical leftists than actual conservative Republicans? Interesting.

Seems like the only "concessions" the freedom caucus want is no McCarthy. So yea, this is what happens when you make stupid demands

A lot of the stuff they want is already in the rules waiting to be passed. What these fools don't realize is that the rules can be changed by a simple majority vote.

Seems to be a lot more GOPers not voting during the roll call. I wonder if they're waiting to see where the vote tallying goes?

They did have specific demands, to which McCarthy responded with threats to remove them from any committee assignments. I guess he's more amenable to negotiating with the radical left. As I said, telling.

It never stops because the moderates always control the GOP.

Boner, Ryan, McCarthy... list all their conservatives victories. Tell me how much government we have seen cut. Spending?

These people, along with McConnell, Romney, McCain ( glad he's no longer haunting us) hate conservatives more than they hate liberals. They'll absolutely concede to dems before they'll concede to conservatives. It's why they've only encouraged attacks on Trump (who isn't even conservative). They need to step aside.

He can deny committee assignments but more importantly, he can leverage his position to starve the FC of access to GOP funding or access to the big GOP donors during the next election cycle.

Yes but that's only because Trump didn't put his support behind McCarthy yet. Now that he has…I think the holdouts will change their tune. Or face the wrath of the Kingmaker

A solution is available. Ohio and Pennsylvania just now resolved this same impasse this way:

"For about as long as Kevin McCarthy's ascent to House speaker has been in doubt, he and his allies have invoked a nightmare scenario for the ultraconservative House Freedom Caucus: If they thwart him, a handful of Republicans could join with Democrats to elect a moderate GOP speaker.

The play is obvious. They want the Freedom Caucus to fall in line for fear of this outcome, however plausible or implausible. And the man some have floated as the would-be speaker in this scenario, former congressman Fred Upton (R-Mich.), says he's interested."

I think you're overestimating the "kingmaker's" power these days. Pretty sure that McCarthy has failed to secure enough votes since Trumps all caps message in support of him.

This didn't start yesterday.
Then they aren't very effective leaders either if they couldn't get this done on the best timeline. They should have won the first battle...when the caucus nominations were made.

They're not running for Speaker. He obviously isn't a good leader as he has never had enough votes and he has done nothing to secure enough, other than threatening fellow republicans.

Sounds like an establishment dick to me.

If he wants to be the speaker he has to whip the votes in his own party. He failed. That's a pretty pass poor majority leader. It's a political failure on his part.

LOL. Imagine backing the establishment. I'm sure you don't approve of congress, but you want more of the same.

He didn't earn their votes, and he absolutely is threatening them to remove their committees.

Like it or not, the "establishment" has a lot more votes than the freedom caucus. They will vote for a very moderate Republican for speaker with dem help and what will end up happening is no COVID investigations, no Dems will be banned from committees, and big budgets won't be questioned.

But hey, at least republicans got to publicly squawk for a couple of days about how a guy from their party wasn't pure-blood conservative enough!

I hate Trump, but he is right. These 20 or so Republicans want to take a small victory and turn it into an embarrassing defeat.

First of all, I couldn't care less who is elected Speaker, whether it is McCarthy or someone else.

Second, that term is being reported as coined by GOP members of the House, not by me.

If 32 Democrats vote "present," it wins.
