Awesome diagram, but when Musk says he's going to balance twitter so like 10% of the left and right are unhappy, look at the chart... how is that supposed to work?
The X axis in that chart is the amount of conservatism or liberalism a person has, not the number of people that are conservative or liberal.
Yeah, so the chart is showing more and more people are liberal. Again, that 10% of the left that would be unhappy with twitter would be a moving target.

No, it doesn't show that at all.

It's a cartoon and says nothing about the population distribution.

Maybe I'm reading what you wrote incorrectly.

It's showing that what used to be considered liberal is now considered conservative because the left has gone so far left.

Elon used to be considered liberal.
The left went way off the deep end and he would now be considered right, even though his stance on things haven't changed.

I just think it's interesting how people on the left side of the spectrum are on the right side now because the Overton Window has fallen off a cliff.

While I'm glad Elon shares the same outlook on free speech as the rest of us sane people, he probably doesn't share some of other conservative values that those on the right usually find important. That's not a bad thing. I know I said it's concerning initially and I probably shouldn't have worded it that way.

this is my opinion on the overton window shifting. with the rise of Trumpism/Populism/New Rightism, whatever you want to call it, you're going to gain or lose people.

the "right" in the last years has gained Elon, Kanye, Tim Pool, Joe Rogan, Russel Brand, the Weinsteins, Sam Harris, Glen Greenwald, Bari Weiss, etc.

the "left" has gained Bill Kristol, Rick Wilson, Chris Wallace, Mitt Romney, and Jennifer Rubin.

those people obviously are not entirely right or left. i want to have a debate on whether UHC will work and what the pitfalls of it are. not why i'm a racist for not thinking it would work.

Look at Obama in 2008. He was against decriminalizing marijuana, stated his belief that marriage was between a man and a woman, wanted to strengthen the border, increase domestic oil production, and did not propose a public healthcare option.

That's damn near a republican platform these days.

Except he changed many of what the definition is today...meaning he knew in 2007-08 he couldnt be honest of what he believed. Once he was elected he ran as far left as he could and as fast as he could

No...it's showing that what used to be far left has moved way farther. So, the 10% of far left liberals now is the same amount of people, they're just farther left with their liberalism.

Again, the variable is amount of conservatism/liberalism not amount of people.

For example, just taking the left side, say that "me" represents 1 person and the other figure represents 99 people - for all 3 examples.

You're being too "liberal" with your terminology.

What that chart shows is Conservative is still conservative. Classical liberalism is still the same but those beliefs no longer solely fall on the left. And Leftism/Marxism which has always existed has grown in prominence and pushed further left with that larger presence.

Conservative does not equal Republican
Liberal does not equal leftist

Reminds me of a lesson I did in class when I use to teach before the '16 election. I had quotes from Regan, Bush(Both), Trump, Obama, Clinton(both) and judging if you agreed or disagreed determined with the statement was who you voted for. This was a very urban school and across all classes they elected Trump by about 85 to 15

It's showing that "left" is going further and further left. So the left most 10% is also going further and further left yes?

So when Elon says
Quote:

A social media platform's policies are good if the most extreme 10% on left and right are equally unhappy
the extreme 10% on the left keeps going further and further left. That means what used to be considered the left most 10% is now right of the new left 10%. If he follows this strategy, and the left most 10% keep going further and further left, the stuff that is allowed between the two extremes will be dominated more and more by the growing left side.

Let's take the slippery slope of gays for example, and we had twitter back in the 80s/90s. The left fringe 10% would want to be pushing gays on society. But that's the left 10% so we're not going to allow that.

Then time goes on, and gays are more accepted. The left 10% is now pushing gay marriage. That's the part that is taboo and discussion of gays is now common.

More time goes on, and the left 10% is pushing transgenders. Gay marriage is now common but transgenders are taboo.

Present day: the extreme left is pushing child pornography. Transgender discussion is now common but child pornography is taboo.

and so on...

Was going to comment on that meme, but refrained. That graphic is inaccurate because it represents, to a degree, that republicans have been stagnant, but the whole world has largely shifted left, but the far left has shifted so far left that it makes it seem like the right has stood still. It makes someone like Maher look moderate when he was militant 20 years ago.

Not sure I understand your point. The right hasn't really changed, though it is true Trump has some in his block that are more liberal than what a conservative would look for. In fact, there is more work to do from a policy perspective as a conservative now, precisely because so many parts of the government have metastasized further vs. 20 years ago (before Obama started his work).

The new Ministry of Truth and Disinformation comes to mind, but it has also taken root much more firmly in places like the FCC, FAA, various administrative rules/laws/agencies (look up Glenn Reynold's excellent writings on this matter, including overcriminalization, and even Greg Abbott had some good ideas), etc.

Being a conservative hasn't really changed from a political/policy/ideals perspective, is my point, but how we talk with/engage/analyze problems probably has in the past 30 years. A whole lot of our ideas/thoughts after all are...censored in media/labeled hateful/racist etc., and the state has increasingly taken to criminalizing dissent in the public square (such as school board meetings).

Disagree. "Conservative" has moved more towards "libertarian" and that's a good thing. Fewer conservatives worry about homosexual issues than before. ("fewer" not "no") Other than abortion most of the so-called social issues don't concern many conservatives as they used to.

It boils down to those who want to tell other people how to live, and those who don't.

Its not really about left/right anymore as much it is about authoritarianism and populism (and this new breed of authoritarian populism may be the worst of them all).

Trump brought out those socially liberal, economically conservative centrists who previously had have a hard time voting for the Republicans that pander to the evangelical christians (who "want to tell other people how to live").
