Elon Musk has generated fresh interest in Twitter, and you don't have to take his word for it.
Data from two independent research firms, Apptopia and Sensor Tower, indicate that downloads and activity on Twitter are on the upswing in the weeks since Musk bought it and in comparison to last year, appearing to confirm recent boasting from the tech billionaire that he has reinvigorated the social media app.
But the situation is more complicated than a simple rise in downloads and activity.
Quote:
According to Apptopia, downloads of Twitter in the U.S. averaged about 125,000 a day during a recent 31-day period a figure that's 23% higher than during the previous month and 42% higher than a similar period a year earlier.
The growth was slower outside the U.S., though, with 14% growth from a month earlier and 4% growth from a year earlier, Apptopia data showed.
Carolina Milanesi, a consumer tech analyst, said the slower growth outside the U.S. may be an indication that people abroad are less interested in drama around Musk as a public figure.
"If you're in Italy, maybe this is not top of mind for you," she said.
They soooo want Elon and twitter to fail.Quote:
Sensor Tower data on user growth was mixed, showing that installations jumped 16% in Musk's first month compared to the month previous but fell 3% on a year-over-year basis. The two research firms use their own sources and proprietary methods to reach their estimates, resulting in some variation.
Sensor Tower also reported a modest rise in overall activity. According to its research, the number of daily active users worldwide on Twitter was 2% higher during the month after Musk's purchase compared to the month previous, and it was up 4% from the same period a year earlier.
Social media experts said the spark of interest may only be temporary, tied in part to the suspense around the future of Twitter.
"People slow down to watch a crash scene in real life, so I think there's a lot of rubbernecking going on," said Matt Navarra, an industry analyst.

Maybe the first time I've agreed with Pocahontas and by all accounts Elon bought twitter to legit stop this from occurring.will25u said:WATCH: Sen. Good conversation. Among other things, we resolved the misunderstanding about Twitter potentially being removed from the App Store. Tim was clear that Apple never considered doing so.

Holy shit @marthamaccallum absolutely decapitated the Biden White House over how they are treating @Apple — which is blocking communication access to Chinese protesters — compared to @Twitter. Check this out @elonmusk: pic.twitter.com/AGwpHo72iJ

So @nytimes wants you to know Twitter now has 4,000 anti-gay slurs a day. EVERY DAY.
— Alex Berenson (@AlexBerenson) December 2, 2022
Only… wait for it… Twitter has 500,000,000 tweets a day. Yes, after the unprecedented rise, anti-gay slurs account for 1 in 125,000 tweets. 0.0008 percent.

1. Thread: THE TWITTER FILES
— Matt Taibbi (@mtaibbi) December 2, 2022
2. What you’re about to read is the first installment in a series, based upon thousands of internal documents obtained by sources at Twitter.
— Matt Taibbi (@mtaibbi) December 2, 2022
3. The “Twitter Files” tell an incredible story from inside one of the world’s largest and most influential social media platforms. It is a Frankensteinian tale of a human-built mechanism grown out the control of its designer.
— Matt Taibbi (@mtaibbi) December 2, 2022
4. Twitter in its conception was a brilliant tool for enabling instant mass communication, making a true real-time global conversation possible for the first time.
— Matt Taibbi (@mtaibbi) December 2, 2022
5. In an early conception, Twitter more than lived up to its mission statement, giving people “the power to create and share ideas and information instantly, without barriers.”
— Matt Taibbi (@mtaibbi) December 2, 2022
6. As time progressed, however, the company was slowly forced to add those barriers. Some of the first tools for controlling speech were designed to combat the likes of spam and financial fraudsters.
— Matt Taibbi (@mtaibbi) December 2, 2022
7. Slowly, over time, Twitter staff and executives began to find more and more uses for these tools. Outsiders began petitioning the company to manipulate speech as well: first a little, then more often, then constantly.
— Matt Taibbi (@mtaibbi) December 2, 2022
8. By 2020, requests from connected actors to delete tweets were routine. One executive would write to another: “More to review from the Biden team.” The reply would come back: “Handled.” pic.twitter.com/mnv0YZI4af
— Matt Taibbi (@mtaibbi) December 2, 2022
9. Celebrities and unknowns alike could be removed or reviewed at the behest of a political party: pic.twitter.com/4uzkHnQ65E
— Matt Taibbi (@mtaibbi) December 2, 2022
10.Both parties had access to these tools. For instance, in 2020, requests from both the Trump White House and the Biden campaign were received and honored. However:
— Matt Taibbi (@mtaibbi) December 2, 2022
11. This system wasn't balanced. It was based on contacts. Because Twitter was and is overwhelmingly staffed by people of one political orientation, there were more channels, more ways to complain, open to the left (well, Democrats) than the right. https://t.co/sa1uVRNhuH pic.twitter.com/K1xmqQ0TrD

— The Bias (@thebias_news) December 7, 2022
As soon as Musk gets through clearing out the dead wood and exposing the corruption he needs to send the City of SanFrancisco a Tweet telling them to piss off and then move the company to Texas. Twitter could lease space from Tesla until he can get the new offices up and running.will25u said:MUSK: "So city of SF attacks companies providing beds for tired employees instead of making sure kids are safe from fentanyl."
