no it is the left's version of Gab. It will draw the extremes but anyone wanting freedom of speech is on X or Gab
Too many important news and discussions/insights are reported via X so it's not going away no matter how many libs wishcast it to be true.
And live sports cannot be undersold. It's still the money maker for media and X absolutely crushes here. No one else is close. Coupled with what we heard this cycle regarding college and pro athletes overwhelming support of Trump, I think it's pretty safe for now.

The question to me is do the advertisers return and can it make money... but I don't know how much Elon cares about that in the short term.

The only other social medium I use besides Texags is Facebook. I have never used Twitter or Bluesky (which I just recently heard of).

I have noted that a number of my friends on Facebook who voted Democrat have decided to leave Twitter and go to Bluesky and are recruiting others to do the same. One is a cancer patient who has become very active in patient advocacy and said she was tired of the "hate and porn." One is anti-Musk. I don't know about the rest.

Is Bluesky going to be a threat to Musk?
bluesky has like 14 million monthly active users to twitter's 300-500 million, it's not a threat to twitter whatsoever. so far it's basically just a niche haven for the journo academia types who fled twitter.

the only new twitter competitor that comes close is threads, which even then is only within an order of magnitude of MAUs because it's propped up by instagram sending people there and the fact that it doesn't have ads yet.

You should dump Facebook and get on Twitter. It is much much better for news and info.

I got on Facebook years ago to stay in touch with family and close friends, not to follow news and information. (I use Texags for that!)

Along the way, former students friended me so I have wound up with all sorts of strange viewpoints floating through my feed.

If someone attacks Republicans or conservatives in a really harsh way, I just unfollow them. If they say, "IF YOU VOTED FOR TRUMP, UNFRIEND ME!!!, I oblige them.

I know that some of them disappeared from Facebook several years ago because they thought that Facebook was too lenient in allowing pro-Trump and anti-COVID "misinformation."

Congress works "its will". See honorable representative...that is exactly the problem. You're not there to work for yourself. You are there to represent the people. And you have the gall to call out those who would keep you accountable??!???

Was Rosa born a male or female vulture? Everything I can find going back to 1990 when I hadn't even started kindergarten calls Rosa "she" but every picture I've seen of Rosa looks very mannish. And like a vulture obviously.

This old pos. As if he wasn't ecstatic an oligarchy has been running the country in Big Bidet's stead. And that's not even mentioning the absolute authoritarianism implemented during Covid. Yeah, I'm sure 'ol Bernie was all broken up about all that!

Uhhhh, maybe if you would've paid more attention to this part of Bernie the Commies quote "Are we still a democracy or have we moved to oligarchy and authoritarianism"? you might understand my comment better.

Besides, government shutdowns are a dime a dozen. Government employees usually come out of it smelling like a rose since there have been times where they didn't have to work during a "shutdown" but got back pay for all that time anyways, especially those considered "essential employees". That would include Holiday pay, night differential, Holiday + night differential pay, Sunday differential, Sunday night differential pay etc.,... So yeah! It'll be a very Merry Christmas for them!

LOL, I understood your comment perfectly. I was referring to Bernie's "...a shutdown during the Holidays!!" silliness.

This is a long, but interesting read.

How much would it have cost Elon Musk to not buy Twitter?

Quote:

Faced with the [Democrat] party's regime of increasing direct censorship over social media, Musk was aware, in a way his adversaries were not, that the party's ambitions to control content meant that he was coming perilously close to losing control over his own personal dream space, which provides a large share of the value of his companies. Once Donald Trump, a former president of the United States, was thrown off Twitter, the equation became quite obvious: Either the party would control Twitter, in which case Elon Musk was next up for shadow-banning, fact-checking, and eventual exile, at a cost of however many hundreds of billions of dollars to his personal brand, i.e., his companies, or else Musk could assert his own control over that space, by buying Twitter. When measured against the likely losses that would result from being silenced and thrown off the site, and his likely subsequent difficulties in raising public and private capital, $44 billion was therefore an entirely reasonable cost for Musk to pay. The hitch in Musk's plan to buy Twitter was that it relied on the party being stupid enough to sell it to him. Luckily, unbelievably, they were that stupidwhile crowing loudly that Musk was a sucker.

It is clear by now that the Obama party were the suckersnot Musk. In fact, the party's belated war on Twitter's new owner only served to convince other Silicon Valley oligarchs that whatever reputational risks they might incur by backing Donald Trump would be outweighed by the direct risks that party weaponization of federal regulatory structures, which gave it effective control of markets and banks, would pose to their businesses. By letting Twitter go, and then making war on its new owner, in a belated attempt to get him to do their bidding, the Obama party showed both the scope of its ambition and also its hubrisa combination that split the country's oligarchy on the eve of the key election that would have allowed the party to consolidate its power.

With Musk's X now open to all comers, the party's censorship apparatus was effectively dead.

This is sobering if heartening. One of the most evil governments in the world was in the making, and Musk's action helped derail it in a way obvious at the time that cannot be easily denied. Also calls into question every action taken by 46 and the foreign policy at present.
