Ok … recent follow of this thread and really enjoying. Went back and looked at past posts and was gonna say some sort of water snake. Looks like that would have been correct. Those things really get fat don't they?
Can someone explain the difference in the wide head of the water snake wide head of a poisonous viper? I thought that was a tell on poisonous snakes but some of these water snakes and that hog nose have some wide triangle heads.

The head isn't really a good tell. Many snakes can flatten theirs.

1) Venomous, not poisonous
2) Head shape is an indicator but it should not be the only thing you use to distinguish between venomous and non-venomous. Almost all water snake will posture and flatten their heads when threatened to make themselves appear as if they're venomous. A non provoked water snake will not have the "V" shape to their heads whereas a cottonmouth will have this head shape regardless of posturing.
In other words, use a few clues for identification but don't rely on just one, like head-shape.

Dang it. The water snakes I see around here are super easy to distinguish because the pattern is so clear. That one was so dark I couldn't see the pattern
Most mature plain bellied water snakes have no visible pattern or maybe just some faint, chalky looking likes running perpendicular to their body. Diamondback and broad banded water snakes will typically have clear patterns.aggiesundevil4 said:

Water snakes will make it look like their head got smashed, and their eyes will be visible from above. Cottonmoutns and the like will have pretty pronounced ridges over their eyes that will prevent them from being seen from above. So they're not really a V shape, I think they look more like an old school arrowhead.
Man I wish I had a small camera to take with me on runs, saw 6 water snakes today. 4 were what I consider normal size and 2 were very thick. Had a family walk by to see what I was looking at and taught them how to tell "good" versus "bad" snakes.
Very young coyote ran about 10 yards in front of me during my run. Last night I was playing catch with the neighbors kid and had a bobcat come about 50 yards from us (there is a golf course creek that runs behind the house and it was going after a bir). Pretty need little neighborhood.

I looked at stuff like that but most cameras that size wouldn't be able to pick up snakes from 10-15 feet away that are under cover. It is not very often where they are at a place where you can almost step on them like my dog almost did twice the other day

I've sold a couple but there's not a real market for it. I do have a book coming out that has quite a few snakes in it though.
