The rabid coral was seen heading to my neighbor's yard. Kids and puppy, and my hands when emptying the skimmer baskets later, are safe.

Snakes are crazy this year. After 12 years in this house of seeing almost zero snakes- occasional ribbon / garter / grass types of snakes and some years nothing- there's been three copperheads (all apparent victims of vehicular snake slaughter) in the same spot on my street in two months, a big rat snake in my crape myrtle last week, and a coral snake out back today.

Just want to point out that a coral snake "aggressively chasing" is absolutely made up or misinterpreted.

We have had a few in our yard over the years. They have never chased me, but they sure do get squirrely when you try to pick them up with a shovel.

Last time I saw a coral snake was a couple years ago on the baseball field where my oldest boy was having practice. One of the kids was having to run and came in yelling "snake" so I went to check it out since my kid had nearly stepped on a copperhead shagging a foul from the brush a couple weeks earlier. Anyway, it turned out to be a coral snake and that thing couldn't slither away from me fast enough. I managed to get a pic but I had to carefully pin it's tail with a baseball bat to get it to hold still long enough for a picture as I ushered it off the field and into the brush.

Interesting, thanks. That's probably still a bit further north than the map above would show.

A researcher I encountered today was wearing this shirt. I asked him if he knew what kind of snake that was and he did not.

Do you?

haha yeah. I always thought a milksnake (or Louisiana milksnake) is just a type of king snake. I also forgot to add disclaimers for all of the fallacies when depending on an old nursery rhyme to identify snakes:

* only applies to Coral vs King in SE United States
** does not apply to certain non-venomous snakes where red touches yellow in SW United States
*** does not apply to certain venomous snakes where red touches black in central and south America
**** does not account for occasional unusual patterns in coral where red touches black or in king where red touches yellow
***** do not rely solely on a nursery rhyme when IDing a snake and deciding to pick up or handle a snake

I was walking down my driveway to look up in the tree to see what all the birds were agitated about when this rat snake fell out of the tree in front of me.

Yeah, I'm not convinced it's even a snake.

Thanks.

My two year old son got a good look at him too. He wisely said "he's not a nice snake". The snake was pretty fired up after getting harassed by the birds for a while. He seemed ready to rumble when we walked up. He flattened out his body and was lifting himself up in that S shape.
