You sure that wasn't TFOS gobbling down your snake? A little thank you for not letting everyone know he fired a 95?

Getting pretty close to the business end of a cottonmouth there.

That was supposed to be more of a "well…..what do we have here?" Post.

He is unfortunately dispatched. Been in GA 15 years and this is the first one ever in the yard and he showed next to the front door

Eye shape is more or less an old wives' tale of snake ID.

Plenty of other characteristics that identify that as a cottonmouth.

1. Coloration of face. Black "mascara" along eyes.

2. Structure of head with ridges over eyes.

3. Although faint, the pattern on the body.

He was very dark. Mascara was hard to see but clear body and tail

Eye shape I guess.

But there are zero non-venomous native snakes in the US that have vertical pupils (all pit vipers have them).

There is, in addition to the above, one native venomous snake in the US with round pupils (coral).

I think I said that right....

I wonder how many bonus flies he ate during that meal.

For reference, I'd like to know how big that moccasin is and how big that rattler is. The perspective makes the CM look HUGE but it may have just been a smaller rattler.

That rattler wanted to bite back at the end and couldn't. The look in its eyes was like "dafuq just happened and why won't my mouth open?"

So was that a kill via crush injury or envenomation? I think I've heard before that some snake are generally immune to venom but feel like that's an old wives' tale.
krosch11

My understanding is that they are not immune to one another since they are different species.

I'm curious to hear from our experts though, doesn't seem to be much online.
Mr. Frodo

I'm no expert on that… resident rookie on snake thread and enjoying it.

Rattler was dazed and confused for sure but it looked more like it got crushed to me.

Could have had a dose of water moc venom injected right at the base of the skull too.

Not the best pic but it was still dark out as I was walking to my truck to go to work this morning

Scarlet kingsnake I believe --EDIT: its been confirmed its a scarlet snake, not a scarlet kingsnake
Fort Myers FL

We see a lot of snakes as our house backs up to a large preserve, but this was a new one for me

Did it have a lighter colored belly? Pattern and coloration looks kind of like a scarlet snake to me. Very close to scarlet king snake, but slightly different.

Great question...in my hurry to get to work I didn't check.
I wasn't familiar with a scarlet snake before you mentioned it, very well could be that

Very cool, that's a scarlet snake. The orange neck band (and where the first band starts) is a good way to tell the two apart.

Very cool. Add another snake to the list of ones I've learned about on this thread.

How far north in Georgia, if you don't mind?
There are discussions I have seen where people say they have seen "poisonous water moccasins" as far north as Rabun County. Others say they do not come that far north, yet some argue that warming temperatures have pushed their terrain further north.

I'd argue that in general a lot of these distribution maps (not just for snakes but for all kinds of animals) need to be updated not so much because of the warming climate but because of habitat changes which have pushed various animals outside their traditional ranges but have also allowed for them do so.

Thanks to the above two. Every snake seems to be called either a cottonmouth or a water moccasin and is an existential threat to "fur babies", children, etc. whenever they are seen.

I'm getting a new roof built on my house today. One of the guys on the crew just showed my wife a picture of a "big" snake in my yard that was aggressively chasing one of them early this morning during prep as they were tarping the pool and covering the flower beds. Wife said it was red, black, and yellow striped. I don't want to interrupt the crew that is busy throwing shingles off my roof right now, but I'm going to ask the contractor to try to send me the picture from his guy later this afternoon/evening. Stay tuned.

Lol it's probably a damn ribbon snake and they saw the stripes running down its back. My wife described one the same way a few weeks ago, insinuating it was a coral.
